The most successful sellers know the market value of their items and include an asking price up front. Anyone else likely has either no idea of the market value, or is working an angle and is hoping that you don't.
I feel that a lot of sellers are losing potential sales by not stating a price up front. As a heavy trader myself, I ignore those offers since I'm not interested in playing a game of "20 questions" just to establish a price. Many people just wont even bother to ask a price, when if a price had been stated they may have placed an order.
Obviously, there are many strategies for selling in zone, and some items will vary in what is the most efficient way for selling them, but giving your buyer all the information he needs in the first post has been by far the most efficient way of selling for me.
I simply whisper them 'how much?' Generally, I get a price quote or at least rough ballpark. If they instead respond with 'offer' after I asked them for a price, I just ignore them. People who want you to state the first 'price' as a buyer fall into two camps.
A) They don't know the market and have no idea of the worth of said item. They're genuinely hoping to rip you off.
I've found that most people from camp A will actually send me a tell with a rough price after a few minutes of radio silence.
Basically, it's just how I prefer to trade. I feel it is the seller's obligation to make the first move. I do the same thing when I'm selling/ crafting. I always state my price and then they're free to accept it outright or haggle me down.

You can not possibly replace a non existent or fail system with spamming through a public channel, call it zone, global, trade or what you like. A trade channel would be welcome of course, but is complimentary.
This is how it has been in virtually every MMO since time immemorial, with various degrees of success, however the actual absence of a proper system is not a "novelty" in my eyes, it is an epic fail.
