Here's what I know about horses in ESO.

1. Horses start with varying base stats that do not affect appearance.

2. Horses has bag space upgrades that is shown as character bag slots, and players will not be able to equip lower bag space horse if their total inventory is higher than the total inventory slots provided by the horse.

3. Horses gain harness/armor/bags upon being fed 20 times of speed/stamina/inventory. (e.g. 20 feed in speed gives harness) You can have 2 appearance change at the same time.

4. Horses gain additional 1 point to all stats upon reaching level 49.

5. Horses gain tabard underneath saddle upon reaching level 50.

This is my question.

Horse A is level 48 Imperial Horse.
Horse A stats at level 1 is 15/10/0
Horse A stats at level 48 is 43/29/0

If the next feed contributes towards speed, and the horse gains +1 in all stats, will the horse armour show up?

*EDIT*
Update:

Level 49 stats
Speed 45
Stamina 30
Carrying 1

Horse armour shows up at level 49. The bonus +1 to all stats upon level 49 is recognised as a feed, means I had only fed him 19 times in stamina to get the armour.

Level 50 stats
Speed 46
Stamina 30
Carrying 1

Total Feeds
Apple - 30 times
Hay - 19 times
Oats - N/A

Is it definately certain that the horse has to be fed 20 times, or does it only have to _Reach_ 20 in the various Fields?

It is certain that it is fed 20.

Edit: Looking from that angle, the question could be interpreted as, is level 49 stat bump considered a feed?

If it is the feeds that make it get the armour, then the conclusion would be that you have to put the last point in stamina.

You need to feed the horse 20 times in something to get the change. So if you have a horse that starts with 10 stamina, you have to increase it to 30 to get the armor; but if you have a horse that starts with 20 stamina, you have to increase it to 40 to get the armor, and so on.

I was disapointed when I got my gaited horse to 30 stamina and didn't get the armor... stamina is nowhere near useful enough to put it to 40...

Yeah, that's why I'm gonna experiment with this new horse I have, it's already at level 42, but just wondering is there anyone else who has done the experiment before.

Also, I've heard people feeding the horse 20 time at level 50 and not get the appearance change other than the cloth. My assumption is that they only fed 19 and they counted the +1 from level 49 as one of their feeds. If that's the case, then you're right, the last point at 50 goes to stamina. And final stats will be 45/31/1

To sum up, does that mean that, at max horse lvl you can have 2 different appearance modifications (for instance, saddle bags & armor simultaneously) on the same horse? Because I've never seen anything like that in game...

That's not the conclusion of my experiment. Yes, you can have two appearance. The point is that you don't have to feed it 20 times, but rather simply 19 times, and you would be able to save 1 point for your speed.

Here's a picture of simultaneous saddle bags and armour. The horse is at level 50 so there's that small tabard under the saddle.

The L49 feed that gives 1 to each stat is classed as 3 feeds (1 of each type), so it can trigger the '20 feed' look.
  • andre.roques.3b14_ESO
I did the +19 feeds on two stats, speed and sta, on a light horse and at level 49 feed of inv space I got the harness and head armor with one feeding. I'm a few days out from repeating that on a draft horse.

    Aeradon,
Many thanks for posting this as well as the update.
This is crucial information for me as I wasn't intending on levelling yet another mount just for the purpose of figuring this out.
Will have my mount go there shortly.
