AFAIK, you get the same amount for each research tier regardless of the quality of the item researched. Your best bet with "intricate" items, particularly with the normal/white ones, is to upgrade them to at least green, then deconstruct for maximum skill gain. Green upgrades are fairly easy to come by simply from deconstructing green stuff (especially if you have 3/3 in extraction).

The only reason I ever noticed it was that I was online when a research timer ended and the inspiration was sufficient to push me to the next level.
Me too. I've had that happen a few times, actually, and the first couple of times I couldn't figure out why my craft skill had randomly leveled while I was offline. Then I noticed that it happened when I had completed researching a trait, and that's when I realized that research gives you inspiration (which makes total sense, I just didn't know it worked that way).Ive logged in to skill increases from it.
