How to understand armour appearance?

I do not understand how to get a certain look in crafting armour.
Before I spend a boatload of material to test, have any of you done this already?
Obvously the Motif determine the base style, but then what.

Does Trait matter for anything, like color?
Does Level matter for anything, like complexity?
Does Quality matter for anything, like wear?
Does an applied Set matter for anything, like details?

If so, how to determine this without wasting all my materials?
If not, WHY!?
Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

All styles have 3-4 different looks to them why you can't use an earlier form for later levels is something I don't understand. You can see for yourself when you uncheck Have Mats and Have skills then go to the forge or clothing table. Side-scroll through the primary material from left to right with each race style. At around Orcish or Dwarven ingots they all start looking exactly the same, from then on the color changes as you go up based on the quality level. For example I had Dunmer level 50 cloth which looked like a Metallic Blue at Purple quality, I have the same armor at VR6 also Purple quality, but it's now a Salmon Pink; the design is the same.

Unfortunately there isn't any preview (really stupid imo for a 2014 AAA title).

Quality changes colour and so does level of the item. Traits and set doesnt change anything design related.
Hota'h, Dual-wield/bow full medium armor NB Khajiit from day 1.

Okay, I made these a while back before the Craglorn patch came out so the colors may not be the same. I had around 800 or so Calcinium ingots and decided to burn through them to see what each of the Armor types looked like, I eventually ran out of materials so I couldn't go through all the items. This was for my personal use to mix and match armor pieces to create a whole new look, most of the game will look like these so I consider them baseline except for the first 20 or so levels.

Trait: Trait has no influence on gear appearance.
Level: Different levels have their own appearance.
Quality: Different qualities have their own appearance.
    Sets: I'm not certain.

I just don't get why they don't have a preview. With both style and level changing the look drastically you have no real idea of what an item is going to look like unto you make it.

If the set is a dropped set, then it may have it's own, unique appearance. Crafted sets, on the other hand, look exactly the same as any normal gear you would craft. So, a medium jack of (say) Vampire's Kiss will look exactly the same as a medium jack that was crafted at any regular clothing station.
