What is the drop rate in the purple recipes??? 1 in 1 million chance it will drop?
I haven't seen one yet in my time playing since the game went active!

At VR3, I've found one purple recipe so far (somewhere around level 45 as I recall). But I doubt anyone knows the drop rate (how would they?), and Zenimax has no reason to tell us what it is.

I don't know a Drop Rate, but i do know I've found about 2-3 in all my Alt-rolling and Main play time since March 30th. They do seem to be MUCH rarer than Motifs.

Blue Recipes seem to share the drop rate of Motifs

I was so excited to find the Consumate Frog Leg recipe, nom nom om

Yes, these are a bit too rare. You can't even find them for sale at outrageous prices, you can't find them at all.

even one per guild for the top provisioner would be ok ... lol. Some kinda raid quest or something .....

Also, I have had top tier hireling / prov for a week and all I get are grapes ... wtf. I trash those useless mats. One I get 1 pepper instead of grapes. wooooo!

I have found enough duplicate blue cooking recipes ranging from lvl 20 to VR5 to cover 5+ characters. I'm also a crazy altaholic and hit up every crate, barrel, chest, drawer, desk, etc. every chance I get and have not found a purple recipe yet.

Well...my experience is different. Have found 6 purple recipes. 3 vr5 (two drinks and sweetrolls) and 3 lower level ones. Haven't bought any, don't relog farm, just
click on stuff as I go.

Better question... Why are hirelings not bringing us recipes? I mean really? Come on ZOS - we get Kuta's, Rosin, Alloy's from other Hirelings. Why can't we see a recipe show up in mail once in a while?

Even better question, where the hell do they get all the Hops?

I just want Oats and Tomatoes. Maybe a little pepper, but I can get pepper by looting stuff in game, I can't get Oats and Tomatoes.

But, all they ever bring me is HOPS, HOPS, and more HOPS!! Here's some Canis Root too, and a few snowberries. And another handful of HOPS for good measure!

Fine, if you want them to sometimes deliver Hops, but they should be bringing us Oats and Tomatoes at least 50% of the time. Especially for Hireling III.

Instead of bringing us ingredients we can loot hundreds of in game if we wanted to...

Wouldn't it be great if they brought us the V5 Imperial ingredients that are only available for 63g EA from the chef in Coldharbor 50% of the time, and the other 50% of the time they brought us Oats and Tomatoes?

I have a couple lower level purple recipes I found before the recipe/motif nerf of 2012. Motif drop rates were improved.. green and blue recipes drops were improved.. but I think purple may have got missed. Someone can say they've found a bunch of them, I guess.. but when I see people offering over 1 million gold (sometimes over 2 million) for a purple VR 5 recipe on a consistent basis, that tells me something about the rarity.

Should it be that way? I dunno.. I don't personally think so. Maybe they need something ultra rare and high priced in the game that, and that just happened to be purple recipes. Just doesn't seem in line with everything else.

If you look at a certain goldselling site the purple recipes are selling for like $US170 >.> so that's how rare they are, even the farmers can't find them.

I was being over dramatic. A while ago (admittedly not in 2012, I was just giving it a silly name) they severely nerfed the drops of recipes and motifs. In a later patch they fixed most of it. Purple recipe drops did not appear to be a problem (they were selling for around 6k-15k gold for the VR 5 ones.. sometimes a bit more, not over 100k though). When they rebuffed the drop rates, or fixed empty loot containers, I think a bit of both, purple recipes didn't seem to get increased as well. Motifs and other recipes went back to approximately normal, purple ones did not.

    That's not really what happened.

The drop rates were nerfed. When that happened, it came with a bug that apparently made more containers empty than was intended. When they fixed that, the drop rates appeared to increase, but all that had happened was that fewer empty containers increased the chances of a drop.

So short version: after the nerf, the drop rates for rare recipes/motifs have not been altered.

I suppose, I don't know that for a fact.. I know in threads they said they were watching the rate.. and I know that motif prices are now back to what they were pre-nerf, and in some cases priced much lower. It could be because not as many people need them, it could be because the drop frequency got boosted a bit. What exactly they did or changed on the back end doesn't really matter.. my point was more that when everything else saw a price drop back into a normal level, the purple recipes did not.. so their drop rate, even if you attribute that to empty stuff, did not increase at all after their changes. They remained ultra rare.

Maybe that's how they intend it to work. Seems kind of odd though. It's the only crafting skill where the very topmost elite item you can get can't be obtained through hirelings or nodes or deconstructing things. I guess it's kind of a different thing since it's not a component, rather more like another skill you must learn. But all the other crafting skills - if you train enough you can get to a point where you are able to craft every single thing you would ever want to. Provisioning is the only crafting line where that is not possible unless you get extremely lucky to find one of these recipes.

If they want them really rare, but with a decent connection to someone crafting in provisioning, then maybe a 1 in 100 chance (or even worse) if you have your top provisioning hireling and 50 in provisioning of getting a recipe from a hireling.

Totally. This would increase the chance of them falling into the hands of an actual provisioner rather than someone who has bots farming containers to sell items for gold.

If Hirelings started dropping them you'd just end up seeing more sales once people learned them unless the hirelings were programmed not to drop known recipes.....

Er, dunno, pretty sure they were. When the nerfed happened, I'd just hit veteran and thought I wanted something really special for my first vet outfit so decided to farm for a motif. Well...I farmed for over a week, found over 1k lockpicks(yes, I picked them up for fun), half a dozen treasure maps, hundreds of racial gems and useless low lvl provisioning mats, a dozen blue recipes
and not a SINGLE motif. Yeah, 2/3 containers were empty, but if the rate had been as it is now, pretty sure I'd still have found like a dozen.
The funest part is after lockpick 1111 I gave up and bought Barbaric fo 45k...and then NEXT DAY they buffed the droprate again and I found Barbaric in very first container I looted XD Since then it seems like a motif an hour or so for me if I farm for motifs.

Far as purple recipes go, as a vet 8 who'd been here since early access I have found 2. That's with looting every container and all the farming. One was some lvl 30 or so drink, the other vet 5...also drink. Does anybody even use drinks? I had half a mind to just give it away like I do with blue recipes, but ended up selling for 50k. The original offer was 80k, I lowered it to 20k, she upped to 50 and we got a deal:P And I now have a new friend who can make purple food for me^_^ Pays to be nice.
