Is ESO too AoE friendly ?

I just wanted to have your opinions and be able to discuss about this.

There is obviously two side in this question : PvE and PvP.

As far as as I'm concerned, I don't do much PvP, so I won't argue on this part.

But in PvE and especially group PvE (dungeon and Craglorn, can't say for Trials didn't do it) I think that there are too many encounters where you just need to burst AoE DPS the hell out of hordes of trash mobs.

I don't say I don't like it, but I think there should be a balance between that and more intimate, strategic fights (might as well give tanks a real work to do) on trash encounters (big bosses are fin I guess)

For instance, either replace some trash encounters with minibosses,1 to 3 of them at the same time. Or mix the two types of encounters in some way...like one boss with some trash. There are already this kind of fights with 'elites' in the mix instead of real miniboss, but they're just as easily burnt down by AoE than the mobs that surrounds them.

Just some thoughts. What are your opinions on this ?

Most MMOs are in my experience, AOE XP farming is rife everywhere.

I have two characters, one built for aoe and the other is single target. For solo, I totally agree that the aoe build is better. However, in group dungeons, I say that of the two damage dealers, it is better to have one aoe and one single target. The aoe build is great for trash mobs to burn a whole group. The single target damage dealer in those situations can concentrate on the dangerous mobs/healers and burn then as fast as possible. This is the same for bosses, where if they spawn ads, the aoe damage dealer burns those while the single damage dealer can burn the most dangerous ones.
Having two aoe damage dealers will burn trash mobs a lot faster but I have found that if the dangerous mob/healer is not inside the large group, the overall fight will take longer. My single target character is a nightblade and I have been in groups where I can take down the healers and ranged mobs at the same rate as the aoe build and tank can kill the melee mobs. Though all this is a matter of opinion I personally think that for groups, having a mix of aoe and single target damage is best while solo is best for aoe damage.

Honestly with the craptastic rec targeting system they decided to go with, it really has to be more about aoe than single target. When was the last time you were in the middle of some AP *** in Wabbajack and were able to focus on that particular ae healer hidden in the middle of all of the other smurfs?

So yes- it is an ae game and has put itself into a corner of that is all it will ever be. You do have the option, I guess, of stopping everything, hitting escape or I or running through menus or whatever keybind you have to switch to cursor mode for better targeting only in the 10 seconds you waste you cannot use any abilities and are dead anyways to all the Impulse trains that groups use in wabba. GL HF ;))))

Hint: Don't use Wabbalag, if you do, sure, aoe is better but if you are having problems using the target reticule then you should go back and learn to use it. A lot of mmo's are trending to use it.

"Trending" to use it because it's cheap.

    Yes. In PvP too.
Life of a Nightblade (Screenshot Tumblr)

Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.
