Grain Solvent, Tempering Alloy increasingly difficult to get hold of!

Ok so at one point in time I was getting Grain Solvents and Tempering Alloys from the miner hireling every few days. 2 weeks has now passed and I haven't had a sniff of either of these materials, did ZOS change something else?? What makes it worse is there is no vendor you can buy this stuff from or even get by breaking down weapons, for 1 there are no legendary weapons out there in PvE etc.... And ZOS wonder why people source this stuff from illegal vendors?? It's a no brainer you cannot find the stuff ZOS you *******.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble finding them. I got a tempering alloy from a hireling a few days ago so they are still popping up every now and then.

They are both rare items so have only gotten a few of them mostly from the hirelings. I think I did get one purple from raw materials once.

I haven't noticed a difference in drop rate from when I started to now for them. Hope your luck changes soon.

You have a chance of getting the upgrade mats every time you refine raw materials (10 of each ore for example). The rate is 3% for legendary and 8% for epic.

Is that with or without the three extraction passives?

Hirelings returns are somewhat inconsistent and "random", true. However, refining raw materials seems to be much better, even from low level resources like iron or jute. Provided you have invested in the relevant crafting skills.

I seem to receive epic and legendary grade materials at a decent rate from refining raw materials, or am I being just ultra lucky? I would say that out of 10 stacks of 10 raw mats I might get 1 or even 2 sometimes, which looks fairly OK to me.

Please tell me with that name you are not using a staff? You'd better be wielding an axe or you risk getting banned...

I don't have hireling alts, but I still get a decent amount of legendary clothing and blacksmithing mats from my main's hirelings. Refining raw mats is still the easiest way to get them, though. It seems like the OP didn't know this worked.

    That's with 3/3 sorry.

Edit: In fact, since I'm unsubbing when the account page comes out of maintenance I'll give you all my numbers:

I did around 10k refines for a sample size before I stopped counting and got this rate:

    16.5% green / 14% blue / 8% purple / 3% gold - for every refine

So, let's say you wanted to buy raw materials and make money from them. You buy stacks of raw ore for 1.2k (what it's going for on AD US) and you refine them so you can sell the mats for 30 / 300 / 750 / 3000 each (as of now, they'd sell pretty quick at those prices). On average, this is how you find what you would make:

    0.165*30 + 0.14*300 + 0.08*750 + 0.03*3000 = 196.95 gold / refine in improvement mats.

But there's more to it, the mats you refine can be sold, on average you get 8.5 refined mats per and they sell for 4g each, so that's another 34g.

    So, for a stack you would get 1969.5 + 340 - 1200 = 1109.5g / stack of ore bought.

Basically, if you buy raw materials you are nearly doubling your money. Enjoy.

I'm pretty sure they nerfed the hireling temper drop rate down a couple weeks ago (just based on what I receive from my clothing, woodworking and blacksmithing hirelings and what I heard from guildmates about their hireling mails at that time).

But I also think they buffed it back up within the past week, as I've been getting more (and higher level) tempers again recently.

Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

I don't think it was just limited to hirelings. It would be interesting to see the breakdown now of the 10K ore if you did it under the current nurf. I broke down a couple stacks and stopped because I noticed something was wrong in the drop rate. I came here and noticed some of you are experiencing the same thing. A noticeable decline in the dropping of purple and gold mats from hirelings and thru refining!

This week, monday 16th to friday 20th of june I got 4 tempering alloys out of 8 hireling mails, 4 days worth. I know because I had full inventory and left them in the mail, and when collecting them all I checked. Most days I get none.
    Its random.

lol this thread is funny they are supposed to be hard to get.. that being said there is a skill in blacksmiths that makes ur chances higher for extracting items from decon and refinement..... i get plenty of grain solvent and temper from refining raw materials i get more with higher lvl mats than lower lvl mats but i still get them... go out collect alot of raw mats and refine u will get the items u seek. do an experiment buy 2 stacks of raw ore refine all of it and see what u get from it

This is true. You do sometimes get them when you are refining the raw crafting materials you can harvest, but it is very uncommon.

And yes they are supposed to be hard to get.

    RNG is a terrible thing...

I have ~34 yellow clothing tempers, but only about 10 of woodworking and blacksmithing ones :s, mainly because IF I get Dreugh waxes from hireling, I get TWO, whereas with other hirelings, I only get 1 (and less often even)

Though it's worse with purple tempers :s and that will probably remain a problem till I can farm epics somewhere.

    1. They suppose to be rare.
    2. You get em from hirelings. Id say 2-3 a week. YES thats enough! (Hirelings at lvl 3 of course)
    3. I get most mine from deconstruct gear. blue and purple gives me the most chance. I got all BS skills of course.
    4. Refining ore

Not sure what people do expect ;-), but read the label on ESO. valueble things are supposed to be valueble. And they doing a damn good job at it.

Also, you have the BEST way to get it. Become a FULL Blacksmith. And you get em.....

I wonder if the OP before posting this, even considered to ask a Black smith friend, or even be one himself?

I do not have the hireling, so I cannot speak to the delivery rate, but you can get them from refining ore.

Just stack up before you refine. I usually wait until I have +100 or more ore to refine then I refine them all in a block. I will usually get 1-3 grain solvents. Tempering alloy is rarer, but I will usually get at least one for every 200 ore, sometimes more.

I tend to agree that refining ore is the best way to go about getting them. Hirelings give them every so often, but not at a rate one can count on. Personally, I'd like to start seeing hirelings drop items that can only be obtained from them, and a chance for rarer items should you max out the hireling perk.
