How to you get Critical Damage chance to work?

On your character description there's a line for "Critical Damage" chance. I'm over lvl 40, but at best I can raise that up to 2% when using a weapon with some trait. Critical damage from skills or power does not seem to be taken into account in character stats. Am I missing something obvious there?

That should be crit chance. Do u have Mage light? Do you have 5 piece light amour on? Are you upswing set bounces that help crit chance? Also their are two crit chance types one for weapon one for magic, weapon crit is vary hard too stack.

Unless you use medium armor. It's pretty easy to get 30% ish weapon crit :)

You need medium armor for weapon crit, light for spell crit. Mages light will raise your spell crit, even more with the morph. Weapons will give you some too but not much. Weapon crit can be boosted with a potion by 30%. Water hycinth or dragonthorn and wormwood any level will give you 30% weapon crit. Ladys smock or water hyacinth and namiras rot will give you 30% spell crit. These are 2 ingredients potions anyone can make and and should. The passives in the alchemy skill line are nice at giving you 30% longer potion effects and well worth putting time in to upgrade it.

Thanks for replying, guys, and sorry, I should have been more specific: I'm playing heavy armor with sword and shield. Mêlée weapons becomes real hard when I'm fighting a boss mage or several marksmen for instance - at times I hardly can get close enough, if my first hit is not critical and they cast a stamina spell, I'm doomed...

Off the top of my head some ways to increase your weapon critical chances would be:

    1. racial (Khajiit) passives,
    2. medium armour passives,
    3. potions,
    4. mundus stone for critical chance (there is also one for critical damage),
    5. divines trait to increase the mundus stone effect
    6. precise weapon trait
    7. some class passives also increase critical chance like NB pressure points
    8. dual wield daggers passive
    9. crafting set bonus from Night's Silence

Some class skills also let you rush to an opponent. Two handed also has a similar skill. Maybe something like that or a pull skill to get you closer to your target before they can hit you might be the way to go.
