AngryWolf✭✭✭To broad to answer. It depends on play style. Once you know that you can pick races that have natural abilities to that play style and class. Seach the web, MANY articles on picking a the best race for different classes.1 -

Reykice✭✭✭✭✭If he is new to MMO`s... the Sorcerer with the pets handles multiple enemies easier in PvE... couple it with a Resto Staff to heal the pets(and yourself) and you have a decent tho not fast solo machine...
That build will not work at all in PvP... where most classes are more or less balanced depending on how they are used.1 -

You may see a few Winged Twilight's but no one seriously uses pets in PvP. The WT can heal and also buff magic for a group which is why you see them sometimes.0 -

Dayv✭✭✭✭I can't comment on templar because I've never played one, but of the remaining 3, I'd recommend sorc or DK, depending on whether melee or magic is more his thing. The rules change on this at VR and magicka build are much favoured over stamina ones, but both classes can be adapted pretty well. NB is just a more challenging class to play in my experience, despit claims on the creation screen of them having excellent survivability or soloability or something like that.0 -

So, why is it the best? It has a whole skill tree dedicated to healing and recovery with passives to boot. And, yes. You could just use a healing staff and roll with that. So templars are best class because you need group to do quests and you only can be healer? Seems very good class and it is very interesting to play with it...
To OP, DK and sorc are safe bet, right now they dominate both PvP and PvE. But if your mate is willing to wait I suggest NB, this class is broken at the moment but ZOS are fixing it and afterwards it will be probably strongest class.Some men just want to watch the world burn... I just want a cold beer!1 -

Just a side note:
Keep in mind that those who are talking about the light armor with resto/destro combo are talking about endgame and only endgame. The "overpowered" combo they get to use is not available to you until late in the game since it is completely dependent on the last abilities you get in both the resto and destro staves. To get those abilities you will be well in your 40's at the very least.
I am not saying it is hard to level with that in mind 1-50, but I am saying that if you go that route straight away don't expect to be as strong as everyone says.
Not a big deal if you are a power leveler, but if your friend intends to take his time then he will have to keep that in mind. Also chances are that if your friend takes his time that by the time he gets to that level those abilities have been nerved already.
The best class?
I know a lame answer, but at least until veteran rank it is whatever class/build you like best. Some go faster, some survive better and some take some getting used to, but in the end just pick what you like best and pray that by the time you get high level your build is buffed and not nerfed. The leveling will be most fun that way.
Even a heavy armor pure stamina build which is currently the weakest combo is very capable 1-50 and doable after that.0 -

DK and sorcerer are the only real choices. NB is a bit under powered. Templars are a joke.

✭Great info @fyendiarb16_ESO. It's exactly how I ran my characters. Played pretty much whatever I liked 1-50. Knowing all along that at some point I would have to shift gears.

does he like grumbling all day play a templar (as anyone is superior to your class) - even though if you like healing in small group pvp templar are really nice.
if he likes solo PvP either Sorc or NB both can be awsome in this regard.
larger group pvp or pve in general either sorc or DK.

It depends on his play style. If he likes easy going anytimers with no challenges he can go with DK else he should try NB but let him know that not everyone can handle him or have wrong expectations. As well he needs different strategies for Vet AOE 5 + packs.
Sorcs ok and Templar needs some rework, his class lines have a weak concept when it comes to flexibility.0 -

next would be the sorceror, not due to its current op status but because its animations are freaking awesome. many a time while I was fighting a sorceror breezed to help shooting lightning out of their fingers and I thought.. hey wow... thats cool.
