How to play ranged?

So, I'm not really big on MMOs, so I don't know if this is a common thing..

I'm playing an archer, but if I get too far away from what I'm fighting, it instantly recovers all of its health and turns invincible as it runs back to its starting position. How can I keep my distance as an archer without causing this to happen?

This is a natural occurrence when using ranged attacks: you back-pedal away from your enemy.

Simple. Dont run back so much. You have 2 skills in your bow tree that can CC them very well. The 3rd one (scatter shot i think its called) gives a 6m knockback and then can be morphed to a 6m knockback and moves you 6m back (so 12m distance) or a 6m knockback and a snare. This will help you alot in keeping distance and you dont have to back pedal at all. Also there is the 4th one (arrow spray) which can be morphed to bombard. This skill immobilizes the mobs for 4 secs and then applies a snare after. Its extremly useful. Bombard i would use for groups and scatter for single target. Because you didnt state your class, not much else i can help you with.
Banned for Naming and Shaming exploiters. Great ideology ZOS.

This. and get the Kyne's flight set ASAP. Every bow attack applies a snare with it

Each enemy has a "radius" from its spawn point that the battle has to stay in. You can back-pedal all you want... just stay within that range. Its not always wise to back up in a line anyway as you risk running into something else.

Use snare or other crowd control options to make a direction change. My archer character is a DK and I usually open up talons on them when they get to me and run straight through them the other direction. The battle then takes place in a relatively confined area without them ever being much in melee range.

this has been explained already, but the enemies in this game have a certain "Area" that you must keep them in. if you pull them back to far(aka kiting
0 they retreat, and instantly get all their health back. therefore, you will have to use abilities and dodge/block. scatter shot is a very important ability, and i honestly don't know how an archer would survive without it, unless you swapped to a melee weapon. scatter shot knocks enemies back, and can be morphed to knock you back some as well, or snare them. poison arrow can be morphed to venom arrow, which disrupts special attacks(when the squiggly lines pop up above enemies heads) and stuns enemies temporarily. arrow voley(2nd of the 1st 3 bow abilities i believe) deals AOE damage, and can be morphed to scorch earth, which deals some good damage, allowing you to finish off enemies before they get to close and do too much damage, but besides that, i don't know how to help anymore if you don't state your class. I'm a NB, and i combine venom arrow, drained shot, and scorch earth, with assassins blade(morph version impale) and shadow cloak(morph shadow disguise) i use impale to finish off low health enemies(deals 300% extra dmg to low health ppl) a lot of ppl think this ability is not worth using, but it has saved my chars life on multiple occasions. and shadow disguise turns me invisible, which i use to get out of a corner, or when i get surrounded. i use deathstroke to disrupt attacks and knock enemies down, i then use scatter shot, then go from there. that's how i do it. idk what class you are though, so idk how you can do it

    Thanks everyone.

I already understood what was happening, I really just needed suggestions on how to combat it. The fact that it happens at all is a bit annoying, regardless of what we can do to avoid it..

I've seen the suggested skills to knock things back and so on, but I'm still very early on, and things keep getting to me and killing me because I'm scared to run back and reset them, especially dungeon bosses and such. My bow skill is not high enough to take those skills yet, and I'm nervous that larger things that I NEED the knock-back on the most will be immune to it..

The enemy leash and mob respawn are two things that are just feel unnatural when you transition from a game like Skyrim to an MMO. You get acclimated to the strangeness of it, because there is some necessity behind it. (Other players need to be able to fight these monsters). One gripe I have about how it happens in game though, is that they put Lorebooks right next to a monster, where the only way you can read them is if you screenshot it or find it online. I do find that particularly annoying.

Lorebooks aren't a problem, they are registered in your library. Other books aren't, at least not until you get Eidetic Memory - but it's still bugged, so it doesn't help. Librarian add-on does. :)

Add all of the bow skills you've earned to your skill bar so you level it up faster and kill animals. It's annoyingly grind-ey but once you've got scatter shot you can just play normally again ;)

Circle straff to avoid having to back-pedal.
Keep and eye on when the NPC starts a heavy attack so you can block it. It'll stun the NPC for a couple of seconds. This couple of seconds is enough to reposition yourself.
For a Magicka build I would even suggest to regulary roll (double tap) forward with a fast sprint to put some distance between you and the NPC.
