I don't see why it can't be an optional toggle.
I personally don't want them, but as long as I can turn them off I don't see why not.

They can keep it under the hood, like they have done with damage numbers. It will enable addon makers to create addons for it, like Tamriel Foundry Combat.

Yeah, I was agreeing with you btw.
As long as both parties are catered for, I see no reason not to allow it for those that want it.

That's the response you'll get from some people. Honestly, I'd like to see nameplates added too, or at least that portion of the API opened up so the community can create some nameplate add-ons.

If people want their precious immersion, they can just leave them disabled or not use nameplate add-ons.

Nameplate functionality is all there but they disabled it because they had problems with it. It's all there in the API, people just don't have access too it...

Total agreement, this one feature (lack of) that makes no sense. Communicating among players on the fly is nearly impossible in the game, when everyone is jumping around it AND the cursor is fixed in the middle of the screen. I mean really.
