I remember reading somewhere that each race had a special active but was removed. Anyone know why?

Yes, each race had benefits and downfalls (they were inherent, not skill point related).
There were also birthsigns which have loosely translated to Mundus stone effects.
They made for a more interesting mix in many ways.
If they originally implemented this, they probably removed it for balancing purposes ~ not wanting someone to claim that one race was inherently better than another.Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

Probably has checkbox on Customer Service profile that say High Aggro, 99% immunity to BS0 -
In early versions each race had a racial ultimate. But as you can see it was removed to get away from... "This racial is op qq", to bad this type of qq still happened anyways XD1 -

Let's see if I can remember some for you. Loosely
Breton. Create a protective bubble, protect based on 100% max magicka.
Kahjiik. Fear 2 targets for 4secs.
Dark elf. Summon an ancient protective guardian to taunt.
Wood elf. Summon a bear to tank for caster
High elf. Recover 100% magicka back
Nord. Battle shout,increase ally power.
Argonian. Call upon hist skin to remove all rebuffs
Redguard. Can't remember
Orc. Battle rage, increase power to the caster.

That Dunmer one sounds amazingly nostalgic, like Ancestor Guardian power in Morrowind/Oblivion. I still like the racial skills available, nice amount of individuality.
