My Review - VR12

Finally having hit Veteran Rank 12, I feel I know enough about the game to leave an educated review. I enjoy this game and will personally continue to play it through Trials and beyond despite any criticism I state hereafter.

Combat - 7/10
- Combat is rather satisfying and relies heavily on blocking and dodging as melee and movement as ranged. It also severely punishes you for not blocking/dodging/interrupting in later veteran content. This is overall a positive as it encourages "smart" gameplay instead of mindless rotations. I docked Combat a few points because the ability to cancel your attacks into immediate blocks without penalty to your damage or the attack going off is gamebreaking. You essentially never have to be without your block up.

Progression - 5/10
- Exploration Progression. One of my biggest gripes with this game is how I and most others were under the impression that an elder scrolls online game would provide you access to all of Tamriel for you to explore (didn't I read that somewhere?). What really happens is you start in a corner of the world and are zone locked by required quest/level progression in the third zone. Again locked by level progression in the 5th zone. Once the story is complete, you can enter one of the other faction's zones where you are again locked by story quests from progressing to other parts of the world. Once the world is fully explored, I suppose you would then have access to all of Tamriel in an open (yet rather disjointed) world scenario.

- Level Progression. A controversial subject with this game. I feel that 1-50 was very satisfying and there was a good variety of ways to progress. Veteran content however was a head-against-wall bash fest that both sucked and had me staring at the un-sub screen in account management more than once. It's just slow, boring, questlocked and mindless. Craglorn came out and we all know what leveling has boiled down to. Exploits, Farming, Bugging Quest mobs etc. Pretty lame.

Story - 8/10

- Typical ES fare. It's quality work. Doesn't really cushion the vet grind, but it is something that a lot of time was spent on.

Dungeons - 9/10

- The 4 mans are a lot of fun. Vaults at 50 is EPIC. The trials in craglorn (of what I've seen) are not overly complicated, but the rez limit requires everyone to be in sync or everyone pays the price.

Crafting - 10/10

- Crafting is a blast. You can make some really powerful gear. Researching is really rewarding and there's a bunch of money to be made. My only gripe would be that enchanting seems to take dramatically longer than the other tradeskills.

PVP - 7/10

- While its great that we have such huge battles, where the hell is dueling? Hah, that aside... Cyrodiil is a whole lot of running and riding horses for short spurts of zerg pvp action. Camping a skyshard in enemy territory is pretty fun, but it can get old. If you really get into it, there is a method to the chaotic mess that is the world PVP in this game, but even if you do like it and you do get into it, you still have to deal with the performance issues that it suffers.

Overall I would give this game a 7/10. I personally enjoy it despite my vitriol for various aspects of it. Most of which I am done with at this point. Feel free to criticize my review and me as a person if it makes you happy.

I find the 'head bashing against a wall' VR leveling feeling comes mainly from doing it to level(as in, playing for the sake of getting to higher level, and nothing else).

I have a VR2.5 nightblade and i don't feel like that simply because i am doing the quests in vr zones for the quests, not for the leveling. The leveling is just something that happens, a side-effect of my adventuring. Also, i don't feel locked to the area of my VR rank - i am currently doing quests in Reaper's march which is a Vr5 area. It is challenging, but not impossible.

Just curious , how many skill points do you have to play with at VR12?

The problem is people reach vet rank and think: Yes I am at the endgame. And no you are actually not. When people realise that they decide they have to reach max level as quickly as possible because they finally want to be at the endgame, because you know they are not lvl 49 but vet
Thus everyone feels like they are grinding levels. No, actually you are not all you do is questing as you did the past 50 lvls so why do you call this grinding now but up to lvl 50 questing?

I think it is due to the misconception of being at the endgame at vet 1 that people get annoyed.

As OP says, this is controversial. In my case, I've literally opened up my account twice and hovered over the unsub decision before deciding to stick with the game. Craglorn kept me in the game, the second time. However, a lot of my guildies have left. We had about 60 people from another game we all played together at launch and now we are down to about 15 of those people playing actively.

I love the art style of this game. It's the best ever.

The VR thing is not well done, in my opinion. I am thankful for being able to level in Craglorn, though. The OP hits the nail right on the head, in my opinion. I like to play alts, but this doesn't do it for me at all.

If the VR level keeps increasing every 4-6 weeks, I don't think I will continue. I want to enjoy being max level for a while before the bar is raised again. I like to go back and do the quests at a slow pace when I'm not in Cyrodiil.
