Did I make a serious leveling mistake?

fredrock46b14_ESO
I'm a Veteran level 7 Dragon knight. After watching some gameplay videos other veteran level players have created I think my character really sucks. She doesn't even come close to the damage being done in these videos. Even when I set my skills to match exactly what they are using.
I can't figure out why so now I'm wondering if I made a mistake in leveling. What I have done is to swap out the maxed skills I actually use to ones that still need leveling just before completing quests.
I figured that my since my necessary skills were maxed I might as well use the quest completion XP on skills that still needed leveling. Now I'm wondering if I had not done that my maxed skills would have still have increased in power in some way I am not aware of.

You also have to pay attention to the order in which they're using their skills. Chances are they exploit by cancelling animations.

Well on one video in particular: I load up the same skills and weapons and I can't get the animations or effects anywhere near to what theirs does. I don't really use a Destruction Staff but I have it and all of it's skills maxed so I thought it should do the same. Could it be the race?
Anyway, so you think it's OK the way I've swapped out skills for leveling?

What you're doing is fine. One a skill is level 4 morphed, it's capped, period.

For your damage... There's something different. Gear, stats, buffs, or rotation.
    Brandizzle - NB
    Drexill The Unbreakable - Sorc

    For teh covenant.

Having a ferarri does not make you a great driver...there is some level of skill in using the tools. A great build is one thing but know when to hit what power, when to fight, when to block at that level takes some skill too. I am not saying your bad...just these are people who really know how to use the char to the max..

Its a skill based game, both on your character and your own skill in playing your build.

I grouped with another DK, who also was tank but choosen damage abilties as well. He was 4 levels under me and I barely got to touch a mob (5-6) levels below me before he killed it.

Personal skill is not static. Its one thing we can change the most.

I disagree that how "good" you are playing your build is based on gear, stats and rotation is all that matters, no. Its how you play it that makes a difference as well.

I am a decent tank, good overview in raid/instance situations. But give me the "best" damage dealer in Cyrodiil, and I wouldnt stay alive long enough to even do some damage.

    Level 7?!

That's about half a day's play. I'd hardly call it a 'serious mistake'.

Besides at level 7 you can't possibly compare your character with end-game videos of skilled players demonstrating how wonderful they are with carefully edited footage.
You can't possibly have maxed out skill lines yet - you only have 7 attribute points and maybe a dozen skill points to play with. You'll have hardly any passives set.

Don't be so impatient, take your time and enjoy the game.

    Yet another example of RTDT!

I have just this to say: NERFS.

I was also watching vids, but they seem to be outdated now. For example Surprise Attack was able to 1shot VR caster mobs pre 1.1.2... now it deals just about 50% of that damage (maybe even less).
Destro staff (and DK) abilities were also pretty much all nerfed since the launch, openly or by stealth nerfs (because it was obviously too hard to up the damage of Stamina-based skills a little, gosh..)

Please, provide us with links to videos you refer to. It would be helpful in analyzing your problem.

    Levelling mistake?

Only if you rolled a NB or Templar.

@Cogo I was wondering has you're main made it to cold Harbor yet or you still under 40? When you get to Vet ranks you can post up some streams that shows us all how that stamina build your using is so much better or equal to the magika based builds?

and this game is so skilled based that anyone with two staffs as weapons can face roll across the keyboard and complete anything currently in game.

And animation cancelling isn't skill, its an exploit or I guess ZOE paid people to
    a) make the animations
    b) place them in game

just so they could spend money on the game

If they don't fix that the game will end up like DCUO where all new content is build around players being able to animation cancel, perhaps thats why Cragfail is so easy animation cancelling

    There's always THIS guy.

I'm gonna laugh at all you fotmers when the nerf comes to DK or light armour in general.

PS: Not that I don't laugh now when I see a cloth staff weilding player roaming alone in PvP.

Then he actually levels and plays! Better than watching DK automations with no player skill.

I am 41, and have lots of question asked to come back and say how things run when I am lvl 50.

    I will.

Note: No one has asked as polite as you just did.

And my build includes magika too, cause lately I have found myself, even as tank to use certain magika based abilities to help a lot.

What is animation canceling and YES, I am allowed to ask a question even if I consider myself a very experienced MMO player.

They also more than likely outgear you. Purple set items and such, rather than greens and blues.

    Fotmer?
Is that a new kind of elf?
