And I'm not even talking about issues like biting-jabs that already have received a lot of attention.
I'm doing Coldharbour for the second time and I've noticed two of the more memorable quest-lines have been, for no explained reason, changed and for the worse.
The Aba-Darre World Boss encounter was a legitimate challenge that actually required cooperation and teamwork from players. I've not seen any thread topics on this forum, reddit, or videos on Youtube complaining about the encounter. We are practically max level, it's OK to throw something that might actually require to think rather than spam buttons. This was one of the few world bosses encounters that I actually remembered and went out to help others to complete it because it was fun. Now the waves and challenging final bosses are gone, it's a pushover.
The Soul Survivor questline in the Lost Village.
Before you had a choice how to complete this quest.
The daedra-dealers responsible for killing everyone in their own villages ask you to KILL YOURSELF, a rather big favor if you ask me, to help them. Before, you could agree OR say, "No." That's good RPG design. Allow the player to role-play their character and consider the story. Now, there is NO choice. You HAVE to kill yourself. You HAVE to help these murderous cretins.
When the game said "We removed the choice and now you have to pick this DRASTIC option" I swore I hit the wrong button and missed a conversation option because there is no way any RPG developer would railroad its players to
kill themselves for the sake of 3 daedra-dealing murderers
. There is just no way any RPG developer would do that. Or at least, if there was, there would be some documented reason for such idiotic and anti-RPG changes. So I abandoned the quest and did the whole long and difficult public dungeon by myself (in the process destroying my armor and using 2 grand soul gems in the process). When I go to the conversation, I hit every conversation option. There is no longer any choice. You are railroaded into
killing yourself for the sake of 3 daedra-dealing murderers
to complete the quest. I've also noticed one of the boss monsters in the Orc village blacksmithing station was removed. I waited a good 10 minutes for him to show up. Apparently they inexplicably removed him. I didn't see him the second time I did the dungeon either.
It's one thing if these quests were broken or not functioning correctly. I might accept dumbing-down, railroading, and removing moderately challenging encounters so folks could progress their games. But these quests worked just fine before. Or is there any overwhelming evidence that the community sought these changes that I missed?
So why were they changed? I am paying $15 a month on the premise that Zenimax would:
1) improve the game
2) address legitimate bugs/issues
3) communicate to me why changes are made.
So far what I am finding is that Zenimax is:
1) Spending time and resources to lessen the quality of elements in the game that work fine and are actually well done INSTEAD of
2) Addressing issues that they themselves have acknowledged such as the Nightblade passives
3) not communicating to me reasons for questionable changes.
In short, if Zenimax is going to continue to charge me, I think it is reasonable to ask that they not make the game worse by removing choice and challenge from decently designed quests and instead devote their energies to fixing stuff that actually doesn't work or have been complained about by the community. And communicating to me and its customers would be a welcome change.
Edit: Apologies for the wrong forum, this belongs in the General Discussion. IF a mod could move it there, it would be for the best.
