"Strive for balance of all things. When the scales tip to one side or the other, someone or somethings gets short-changed. When someone gets short-changed, unpredictability and strife unbalance the world around us...To achieve freedom from greed, from want, and from strife, all parties in any exchange MUST find balance." -House Hlaalu's Philosophy of Trade

"I am ALWAYS very busy, so I KNOW what's best. You need to stay away from the waterfall. TRUST ME, you're better off keeping busy than playing in the stream....Do you know how to swim, Little Scrib?"

...it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
    Belonging to a man.
    O, be some other name!
    What's in a name?
That which we call a rose?
By any other name would smell as sweet.
Retain that dear perfection to which he owes...

It's a Catch-22 for developers though. On the one hand, what makes a compelling, immersive MMO?
    • True accomplishment via difficult challenges that must be worked towards achieving.
    • Individuality via customisation and items, abilities and aesthetics that are limited to certain players, factions, classes and races.
    • A single shard with a single community where all players can meet and interact, and where the players' actions have an effect on the realm that all players share.
    • Real consequence. The risk of real loss (in the form of experience, skills, items, etc) is the one element that creates real adrenalin and excitement.
    • A rich and well drawn backdrop and lore.

Now compare that to what the average MMO player demands:
    • They want everything handed to them with minimal effort. Are willing to pay real money for items, achievements and experiences rather than earn or work for them. They don't want to find a group, or have to interact to trade, or quest or anything else.
    • They want every item and experience the game has to offer. If any player in the game has it, then they want it too.
    • They require multiple shards and disparate communities, "I want a pve realm", "I want a pvp realm", "I want an RP-PVE realm" etc.
    • They will not stand for any loss. Even high repair costs must be nerfed. The maximum loss acceptable is that you have to rez if killed (with all your gear, near to your corpse). Just die/rez, die/rez. die/rez, ad infinitum.
    • Screw the story, I am not even reading the quest text. Hell, I'm not even going to listen to the voice acting. Just give me my loot!

It's no wonder game's companies no longer make decent MMOs but it is sad that they constantly compromise the integrity of their own IPs by pandering to their own sickly communities.

So I just wanted to mark this day as the official end of the MMO.

    May 30th.

Should be an easy date to remember. I'll mark it on my calendar.

Also on this day in history, Evel Knievel successfully jumped 16 cars.

It does seem like MMOs may be on the way out, unfortunately: Predicting The Biggest Video Game Disaster Of 2014: The Elder Scrolls Online (Forbes article)

Yeah same news who praise Wildstar for the new WoW.

One thing has happen in the MMO world the past 5-8 years. Those who gets paid to write about it are more interested in their apps in their phone then doing their job.

To find reviews, good and bad, you have find good sites with people who actually have insite/experience of the game in question.

There was an article reciently that claimed WoW is moving towards the younger customer base. Oh? I played wow alot and the past year, the most common "new" player was a facebook person. Those who enjoy fast, simple, nothing should be hard and guilds should be as big as possible to chat in.

This was my experience as well. Alot of current WoW players are not just kids. Their adults who wants what WoW offers.

Nothing dies - energy cannot be created or destroyed - it just changes into something else and is continually reborn in different forms.

Then where does it go when it enters a black hole, Einstein? /joke, sorta.

energy cannot be created, uh? Nuclear Fusion!

Overall though gaming companies should go back to single player console games and stop trying to sell their mediocre deadline driven games into the MMO market.

That is an absurd comment to finish. MMO's still have a long way to go, but they are moving forwards each and every year. I do wish they would take the polish of today's mmo's and add it to the game-play of yesterdays. Imagine SWG with the finish of ESO..... graphics..birds flying away... you know what I mean.

I also want to see a real mmo FPS. Like gears of war, but online with towns, dungeons, raids and an auction house.... and friendly fire..

If ESO turns out to be "The Biggest Video Game Disaster of 2014," then we're in for a damn good video game year. Remember The Biggest Video Game Disaster of 2013, SimCity? ESO is nowhere near that big a disaster.

A lot of games are going to the Google authenticator to try to combat the bots and gold sellers and to help prevent your account from being stolen.

Unfortunately it will just be a matter of time before the cheaters find a way around that too.

There's well known attacks in the wild against one-time-pad (OTP) authentication schemes like Google Authenticator and RSA tokens, but they usually involve keyloggers and racing login against the actual user since the authenticator codes are only valid for a short period.

OTP defeats both brute force password guessing and stealing username/email/passwords from third party sites, though, and those are the biggest two attack vectors for online games.

After playing MMO's for over a decade, I can say with confidence that ESO is roughly a 2006 six MMO when it comes to mechanics, And a 2012 MMO when it comes to graphics. Story-wise... There is no timeline, only that level 1-50 is amazing and makes me feel like this game has promise, and after that it is all downhill... even PVP is not appealing to to anyone other than min-max'ers who spend hours upon hours that they could have spent being productive in real life, only to figure out that skill A works really well with Skill B, C, D and E.

At the end of the Day, Either you are a die hard fan of MMO's that really likes the PVP in this Game (Aside form it's bugs and headaches), or You are a PVE Fan of The elders scrolls that is wondering what the Bloop is going on with this game and why bloop is not yet fixed, or why new content isn't coming every month, when our subs renew (ffs).

I absolutely Love the elder scrolls, and consider ESO to be a great extension of the Lore, but after 2 months, I can no longer justify paying for this tripe.

And yet Eve Online continues to go from strength to strength.

Eve definitely has had it's rocky moments. So much so that Hilmar started publishing apologies.

That said, they're worlds (Heh. Worlds) better off than ESO is right now. But better than a decade of experience will do that. Assuming said game is afforded that time.
