ESO needs old school dungeon-crawling (Labyrinth Idea)

I would love if the developers added a few massive dungeons to ESO. Basically, most of the dungeons currently in the game are fairly small to medium sized and can be completed in less than 1 hour. I think having a few massive dungeons would be good for the game and would require roughly 2 to 4 hours to complete. These dungeons could be either instanced or public. Zenimax could even give these massive dungeons a unique name such as "Labyrinth" to distinguish from regular dungeons. The picture below illustrates the idea perfectly...

Way cool. Could be made into like a dungeon town. Have points for rest/shop/repair (but not teleport).... maybe?

No offense but this "MASSIVE" dungeon looks like 100 raids put together :P

I don't think it would take 2-4 hours to finish it, more like 200-400 hours.
Sure it would be nice, but I can imagine development just for that would take 10 years lol.

3 rooms in you'd have to port out to empty your bag
    Conquest, Victory, Profit

I love it as long as you can take breaks to sell stuff and so on. I would hate to fill up and have to start dropping stuff just to get to the end. It is a great design. Very cool looking dungeon.

Only be good as long as map is diabled and rooms respawn after next room is killed.

Yeah, I'm thinking there could be a few rooms scattered throughout the Labyrinth that would have a small dungeon town to sell your wares.

I can see this working, put a circle of bosses in the last 4-6 rooms of the labyrinth that all drop legendary set items and minor bosses that drop epics.

Edit: This map has like 237 rooms, thats a bit over the top

Such a super dungeon would fail, there are already some really big dungeons like Wayrest Sewers.

The main reason people don't do dungeons much is because loot was nerfed pretty badly.

Edit: This is somewhat of a Jaquay dungeon and the model would "almost" work if the loot was worthy. If the loot was as-is in dungeons now, most people would consider the place a boring grindfest with minimum reward to get you in.

The Labyrinth would have pockets of low and high enemy density. Not all rooms would have a lot of enemies. Some rooms would be for solving puzzles, etc.

Agreed. If the last bosses dropped legendary gear that would promote the dungeon crawl. However, the player would have to invest a significant amount of time to earn the loot. There would also be minor bosses like you mentioned (half way through) to give players incentive for investing some time. This could work!

This is what next gen MMOs are missing. Yes please!

I would even enjoy it if each room was a boss fight. Bwl themed. Would be something for endgame as well as bragging rights / achivos

Well if thats the case, then this wouldn't fit being public dungeon for sure. Not sure if it would fit being instanced dungeon either, unless you can save your group progress and keep doing in on day to day basis.

However if it's supposed to have puzzles and such things, then it's best if it's just solo dungeon. And even then, I don't see anyone completing it faster than VR leveling.

To be honest, I would have ALOT more fun going through a MASSIVE dungeon for VR leveling than going to another starter area and doing another quest grind. I think alot of players would agree with me. This would give another avenue for VR leveling, which would be fun as hell.

There's a reason next gen MMOs are missing this. Last gen MMOs had it.

Dungeon runs and even raids like this generally tend to prove unpopular to the general crowd. For the simple reason that the majority of players only play 1-3 hours at a time, most of whom don't (want to) spend that entirety in a dungeon run.

I personally miss big raids like this, and find them fun though.

Its been a trend in many games, specifically RPG styled games. A lot of developers dont want to make long RPGs because the majority of the players never finish the game. So the content they worked so hard to make goes unseen by over half of the players.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2012/08/13/only-42-of-players-finished-mass-effect-3/

That link is a single player RPG reference, but the same mentality persists in MMOs. They tend to cater more to the casual gamer who has roughly 1 hour to play (including time required to find a group).

I do like your idea though, and thats a radical dungeon map. D&D much?

I'm thinking casual gamers already have plenty of dungeons in ESO to enjoy for that 1 hour time frame. If Zenimax made one or two massive dungeons for us old school gamers, that would also satisfy the other crowd. They should try to offer as much varied content as possible to try and please every crowd.

Def agree.. and it would be nice if there was a lot more variety in the current dungeons as well. Variety is what the games needs.. Every dungeon feels almost identical. Where are the complex challenging dungeons? Sure there are torch+ dungeons but they are still kinda boring and have almost the same layout.
  • Dazmilan09
I totally agree and support this idea. I want a HUGE dungeon like this for sure. Public dungeons this size with their own campable areas ( or just continue to clear it all) would be totes mcgotes. Would remind me of old school EQ

Yeah, its a little disappointing that most of the dungeons are copy paste.

I like the idea of endurance dungeons, not able to port out.
Could make portals unlockable by defeating gaurdian.
Deeper you get the hard it gets, longer between portals, etc.

You could even have just one of these super dungeons and add more dungeons to the super dungeon as addons.

Did you not like labeling room 120??
PS - I love the idea, and the designs, but kinda confused about room inter-conectiveness. The map kinda bounces around ALOT.

    Still +1 for suggestion.

I like the idea. of course...with the way Zeni has this game designed, it will be the next "expansion" and you will HAVE to do it to progress...no other options...

I keed. seriously, it would be fun. but it needs to be one of those options. do A, or do B, or do C, or do D (the labrynth). D gets cool rewards! if you survive....muahhahahahaaaaa.....

Hehe what's missing is not so much dungeons, but dungeon xp. You can design the best dungeons available in any MMO, but if you get next to no xp from them what's the point?

I like the OP's idea, but without decent xp, it is fail, like most of the group content xp in ESO atm (pre-VR level, apparently things change after that but I wouldn't know). Simply rewarding players for grouping up and running the current dungeons would cause many non-questcentric MMO'ers to return to Tamriel.
