Use Spear Shards they said ...

It was in the death recap. Use Spear shards to help beat them.

A little bit of background info ..

I'm doing the Ripple Effect quest in Glenumbra. It's a lvl 10 quest. I've got to retrieve a few Blades of Alessian Generals. My Templar is lvl 12, wearing 5/1/1 heavy/medium/light, brandishing a two handed weapon. That's what the character creation screen clearly recommended, and I like the look/feel of this combination (I'm aware it's less than optimal). I have one class ability from each stream equipped. I've used them religiously from creation.

I start by clearing out the wraiths. This builds my ult to respectable levels (500% plus). There's a group of three infantry that I need to take out to get the first part and move onto the next one, so I decide to try a group of two first up. So I select two that are isolated from the rest and go into battle. Now I don't know where the third magically appeared from, but I died rather quick. I've been doing just fine up to this point and don't actually consider death to be an issue.

But then I get the newly introduced death recap screen. And I'm like "WTF?"

Use Spear Shards it said.

Turns out that Spear Shards required lvl 30 Aedric Spear. Mine is at lvl 16. So the creators of the game recommend I use an ability I won't unlock for another 14 lvl's to beat this lot, despite being two lvl's higher than the quest they recommend using it in?

Something is not making sense here.

Yes, I'm solo, and there's no other player activity in the area.

Another player finally came along. Lvl 13. We cruised through it pretty easy. I happily took out groups of two solo on the way out with plenty of health to spare. Didn't even need to rejig my ability selection. Might go back for a group of three.

    Cool sh*t.

Point of this thread though was the seemingly unrealistic advice given in the death recap screen. Use an ability you won't unlock for another 14 class skill lvl's. A lot of help that is.

Has anyone else come across anything similar?

Aren't the Templar shown in the character creation screen wearing full Heavy armour?

Yes. But it makes sense to level the other two just in case. A helmet I have hidden and a belt that looks little different. Consider it a focus on heavy.

The death recap screen likely just has a random list of "tips" it gives you on death, to help make you aware of abilities or strategies you may not get know about. In your case, it just selected something randomly that was far beyond your current skill level...a glitch no one thought about until now, I guess.

I'm guessing it just picked out a skill you were using but couldn't morph yet and was just trying to tell you to morph yo skills.

Better than me: When I die all I get for advice is this:

Lucky you. My recap screens always advise me to use potions to restore my health or eat food to buff my stamina.

Because, you know, I haven't have made to here from pre-launch without discovering those critical items of information ...

When you finally unlock spear shards and the game suggests to use it, it will still be funny. Spear shards is a terrible and useless move.

I have a Templar and yes the dps seems abit low and so I die a lot. LOL.
I lead off with Spear Shards quite a lot, then a debuff. At that point with my Resto staff equipped, I use it to regain some magic until the npc is in my face, I then block its first attack, then hit Biting Jabs, once maybe twice, npc is then dead unless its elite. Try it.

Well, technically, it'd take you about 2 pc levels I think, but you'd have to spam Aedric Spear skills in every fight while levelling up, magic pot and keep spamming the AS skills to raise it. Sounds like a ghastly exercise, no fun at all. I keep trying to avoid spamming AS skills, so my Templar would be in the same boat except she's in AD

afaik usage of skills does nothing to level them up.
I strictly is skills on your bar when gaining xp. the more aedric spear skills on you bar the faster aedric spear levels, even if you kill mobs with other skills.
(You can even level Destruction staff with 1h/shield equipped, just but the skills on the bar.)

That matches my experience. I have one skill from each line + an ult and the difference between the skills levels seems to approximate the amount of time I've had the ult's equipped. One being the lowest since I haven't unlocked the ult, the second I have unlocked but have used the least and the last I've almost mastered being the highest.

Two handed is way above the class skills (sitting at 22 atm) as I've had two abilities from there for as long as I could.

If I equip multiple abilities from a single skill line when handing in quests, that skill line will level up faster. So I could get Spear Shards quicker, but that kind of specialization so early on does not appeal, and there's a sacrifice with other class skill lines you need to accept. It also doesn't feel right.

I'm going to keep going the way I am. I'm an Elder Scrolls fan first and foremost, not an MMO diehard. Building potentially flawed characters is pretty much an Elder Scrolls tradition.

I hope they refine the death recap screen going forwards, such that it takes more into account than they currently do. It's got a lot of potential, but I'm not seeing it as being in any way useful to the player atm.

I'm not seeing a benefit to medium either. As a Redguard, I already have stamina bonuses. It appears to be a case of wear light or be gimped. I'll keep wearing heavy.

Seriously? It's just fine. Morph to Blazing Spear for solo content, throw it, and fight inside the circle. It's only useless if you don't plan your fight to make use of it.

Edit- I would like it to have a base damage increase so it wasn't so reliant on procs for effectiveness, but I still like it as it is.

You're right. It even says so in the skill line descriptions. The only one that doesn't say that is the Fighters Guild Skill Line which states it increases for each Undead or Daedra you kill. So I guess the first thing everyone should do is join the Fighters Guild especially in EP where there is a large undead quest :).
