How normal is death in instances?

My wife and I completed a first time dungeon the other day after both dying about three times each. One of the other players said "that's the most fun I've ever had". My wife was shocked, and told me "we should never die if we're doing things right."

I told her that death was a normal part of instanced content and that she should not be disillusioned but challenged. What do you say? Consider the question for all instanced content, whether first time normal dungeon, vet, or Craglorn.

It depends on the level of experience of the group and the individual player.

Yes, your wife is technically right. If everyone is doing their job, no one should die. But there are plenty of people who don't realize that their job involves blocking, dodging and interrupting.

Plus, as you start to get to harder instances, there will be boss mechanics that you'll have to learn through trial and error unless someone in the group already knows them. There are always cues to pick up on, but certain effects will kill you the first time you see them if you don't know what to do.

First time in a dungeon death is normal, dying is an integral part of becoming a better player.

    You learn from your mistakes.

If you can do a dungeon, for the first time, without dying, it wasn't properly designed.

Glad to hear I'm not alone in feeling this way. I think my wife needs to learn that dying is not only a learning experience, but part of the fun.

Death is part of it. Unless you are in a raid group that you have run with a LOT of times, its going to be a bit before you all mesh.

If its the first time all of you run the dungeon expect a lot more as you learn.

If it is a individual person's first time then expect them to die more often than the rest of the group unless they are pro.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

I've played several MMO's and having a few deaths in an instanced dungeon is normal the first time you enter it. This is especially true since the game is new and there aren't a lot of guides available yet on the mechanics of the boss fights.

Group Dungeons, usually are meant to be harder, in a 1st time when you dont know what the bosses do, how many adds will come out etc, usually it results in a death. As you learn how the bosses act the deaths will became more rare.

I have done veteran group dungeons for the 1st time without dying just because someone in the group already knew what to do, so if everyone follows the strategy, it will become a much more easy ride.

In Veteran level group dungeons death walks behind you eating popcorn (and it should). If it's the entire group's first time in that dungeon then death is drinking beers and riding a Zamboni behind you.

Sure, if everyone does everything right, you won't die. Groups rarely do everything right, particularly the first time through a dungeon. Public dungeons even more-so because they scale and change.

Usually the PUG's I do average 4-5 deaths. Guild groups average around 2-3 deaths. The difficulty of dungeons is just right imo.

If it's the first run on a new instance then expect to die, unless people are comfortable with each other and their role. Otherwise, running a dungeon for the Xth time you really shouldn't die unless the content is at or above your difficulty rating.

It depends, but unless you hit a brick wall where your still learning or the group is not able to hit the dps or other requirements it seems to me to be one to a couple times each.

There will usually be a few deaths, but a lot of it might be attributed to learning new mechanics. The first time my group ran spindle, we were not expecting the pulls and insta gib mechanic (it hurt). Once we had mechanics, it was not a problem. Only fight that might be an exception is the pack fight in Selene's...what a pain that is, almost every time.

I have to agree that if you can get through a 4-man dungeon without any insider knowledge as to the mechanics without anyone in the party dying then the encounter is not well designed.

People really need to get over their own fear and shame of death. It's not the end of the world. We have respawns \o/

I agree with what has been said, death is a normal part of an instance. Player levels do play a part, for example a slightly under leveled tank may die occasionally, particularly in lower levels.

If the instances never involved risk, they would be pretty boring in my opinion.

I just ran darkshade caverns earlier and died like 3 times as healer on the last boss because the mob was on my arse the entire time and I ran out of stamina to sprint/dodge with. I asked what I was doing wrong, got no reply. Finished run and got removed from group when the tank ran after treasure chests...

Yeah see, people like that are why I hate pugs.

    I guess.

Now a 4 man by yourself now that's advancement by death. My son's NB is good at this as he can burst almost anything down and then come back to one less. My sorc is pretty good but some groups, they are all linked together, at too high a level, are just too much. Dungeon delving by attrition.

We cheated and did one together the other day ... wait ... that's how it's supposed to work!

Naturally it depends upon the level of the characters in relation to the level of the dungeon, as well as each player's game-playing ability, but in an environment that is around the same level as the characters it seems pretty usual to have a few deaths in my experience. It's actually surprising how many times a particular fight will seem impossible in one or two tries, and then suddenly the next time around it'll end almost 'too quickly'. In some cases this really is because we've come up with a better strategy or learned to work better together, other times it seems like just a fluke. Even though it is fun to feel like you're working together like a well oiled machine and kicking butt, I find it a bit more fun when it's a tough challenge, and I don't mind taking a second or third shot at a battle (or more, though sometimes it will become tedious esp. if I'm out of gems and have to keep running back through half the place). However my wife was also surprised that I see dying several times as a sign of a 'good fight' when she'd consider it a 'nightmare'. So I suppose this is also a matter of taste. Some people feel that dying should be rare and just consider it frustrating or discouraging or 'unbalanced' when it happens frequently (or find trying the same fight over and over boring), while others feel like the challenge is more engaging and victory is more sweet when they've used a few soul gems and had to try several times. As this is a game that is supposed to be Fun, but people have different ideas of what makes it fun, I suppose the easy answer to pleasing both crowds is simply: depending on which way you like it, choose to play in areas that are either slightly under or over your current level. *Shrug*

If you do things right, you won't die at all. However, we are all human and mistakes and unlucky situations happen. I've yet to try trials or craglorn, but at least I've completed veteran dungeons without dying at all when I've went there with friends or guildies. With a random group made up by the LFG-tool, getting through the dungeon without dying is pretty much as likely as winning the lottery.

All I know, as a healer(Ive done realm firsts and crap in games, Ive healed the better part of a decade), when the deaths are blamed on you, it sucks.

Esp when its an incredibly overlevelled nb standing in bad. And I dont know the zone. Im expected to youtube a new games instances already?
