Hey um.. Arcanist needs a buff too

TLDR: Buff Arcanist, please.

PvP context.

Fixing fate realigned is a great start, but that’s a bug fix, not a buff. The class needs some buffs to bring it closer to viability in PvP - it is the least played class by far.

Leave the beam alone, the beam with its dominance in pve has ruined the class elsewhere in the game.. and it’s non effective in PvP due to movement speed and desync, that’s fine. You’ll never fix that with the nature of the skill and the pace of combat in this game and latency. Leave it as a pve skill.

I would never expect any of this to make it in to the game, but if I were to buff this class keeping overall balance in mind, these are things that I’d throw at the wall.

My recommendations as someone who really enjoys this class and does play it somewhat effectively even in its current state:

1. Buff the shields - Runeward was nerfed by over 50% some time ago, and the class has not recovered since. A few options here that would lift the class up but not in an over the top way. Maybe 1-2 of these suggestions would be more than enough for this skill and morphs: A. Buff the shield strength all around, not back to OG strength but maybe 20% more wouldn’t be too wild. B. Increase the first shield duration on Impervious Runeward by 1-2 seconds. C. Add a HoT to either or both morphs. D. Cleanse 1 negative effect per crux consumed for either or both morphs.

- Also Sanctum of the Abyssal Sea - if Runeward received any adjustment it wouldn’t need too much, but as is 60% isnt hardly anything when you have ults out there like Corrosive.. It saves your life sometimes, most of the time people dog pile you and that 60% ain’t nothing. I’d rework it to ~80-90% damage absorbed, 50% of that returned as the dot. In certain builds it can be pulled off as a 1vx play but for the most part it isn’t as effective, but that’s in part due to the other short comings in the kit.

2. Buff sustain. This is a really tough class to sustain on well. It looks good on paper with some of the passives, but you need to take out a second mortgage to cast your skills. My suggestions, again 1-2 of any would be welcomed and suffice: A. Lower skill costs just in general, they are very high. B. Rework a class mastery to give either reduced cost or recoveries. C. Buff Wellspring of the Abyss passive to be any Arcanist skill slotted instead of just Soldier of Apocrypha - change the recovery value if necessary to accommodate. D. Buff Erudition passive to ~20-22%. E. Buff Hideous Clarity passive to ~350 mag and stam, and/or change it to consuming as well as generating crux to proc. F. Give Arc a sustain skill akin to leeching strikes/dark deal/HoF - nothing crazy overtuned. G. Buff Mag/Stam return on Recuperative Treatise to ~1000.

3. Healing - Healing is weird on the arc in PvP, if the sustain was dialed in it wouldn’t be too bad because you could shield more often to accommodate but... It would be nice to have better in class HoT options, I’d say Arcanist Domain would be the skill to put this on, and have it actually be good unlike the current morphs pathetic heal. Tidal Chakram is also a candidate if maybe the shield strength were increased, or 6 sec duration increased, or 33% value increased. It works better as a healer skill than a personal HoT otherwise. Vitalizing Glyphic and morphs - absolute joke needing to heal/damage my ultimate just for it to be mid anyway, remove that mechanic all together and literally double the values to make it semi viable.

4. Damage - Damage is where I actually find the least problem on the class surprisingly - the class passives and T-dread offer a lot to work with damage wise, which is why I have this category last. BUT I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a couple ideas here too that would elevate the kit: A. Runeblades is too weak of a spammable - it doesn’t need a lot but like a ~8% damage buff would put it closer in line with most other spammables. B. Fulminating Rune - give this the Necros Avid Boneyard treatment and let us activate our own Runebreak synergy. C. Psychic Lesion - this passive practically begs the Arc to run status builds (see Spattering Disjunction) but isn’t actually enough to make it feel strong enough on the Arc vs say a sorc - values can be increased here say, ~30% status damage, 75% chance? Idk exactly but current values are nearly unfelt and it would be thematically cool to lean in to a little more. Or perhaps an increased status duration would be neat to tack on there instead even if 1-3 sec or so like a mini built in serpent’s disdain.

In short, the Arcanist class needs something, ANYTHING in terms of a buff. Needs in class major savagery. It’s mobility skill is also bad, it’s damage is okay but not great, it’s survivability is bad due to its bad sustain. It just needs to be thrown a bone somewhere in its active skills and class passives. Class masteries are solid. But the actual kit needs help.

    Honestly

Revert the sustain changes to arcanist. The sustain on arcanists Wellspring of the Abyss passive allowed more than the shield and imo at the time overtuned tentacle to be competitive. But at the moment even if arcanist can technically do some good damage with class masteries the class is basically dead because the defense is gimmicky and sustain is not there.

I would agree with nerfing the sustain of Wellspring of the Abyss back at the time but the standards for sustain at the moment seem way different from back than and i feel like that would be a good starting point for buffing arcanist.

Reducing the cost of skills would be good. Currently arcanist sustain is too much in PvE due to how cheap their beam is, but struggles in PvP because the rest of their kit is very expensive.

That’s the biggest downside of the kit for sure. That’s why I hate the beam, it overshadows the many shortcomings on the class because it’s strong in Pve, when it is more or less useless in actual competitive PvP as a dependable source of damage. Tentacular dread on the other hand is the bread and butter burst skill in the kit and works pretty well as such.

But sustain and skill cost drag the entire kit down as a whole. A buff to sustain is definitely a place to start, and the class wouldn’t have to double or triple dip into sustain to make builds semi viable.

Beam made Arcanist oppressive in PVE, but also has overshadowed the class in all other facets. I'll always appreciate beam for making endgame PVE so much more accessible and growing the community, but it can't be the only viable means of the class forever. Buff doritos by 50% at least and then we can start talking about Arc like we do with other classes.

My main gripe with PvP Arcanist is that multiple abilities compete for crux. Use a tentacle and I won't have a heal for my shield.. use my shield and my tentacle will be weak until I build more crux. Other classes don't have to make this kind of decision (ex: casting Wings doesn't cause a DK to lose their Seething Fury stacks). That said, I do enjoy the crux mechanic. I think every non-crux-consuming class ability should generate a crux upon activation.. maybe it could come in the form of a passive. Another possible solution could be to remove the "if you have none" stipulation from Treatise. Being able to activate my own Runebreak synergy would also be pretty sweet.

It's a bit sad you don't have the ability to choose whether u want to consume or not. Also there's too few skills in the arca toolkit that interact with the crux mechanic in a meaningful way imo. Rather than having the ability to choose based on situation whether you want X or Y, it's just consume crux for beam in PvE / consume crux for shield in PvP.

The whole crux mechanic is underdeveloped.

I agree, the skills compete with each other which is a mechanic other classes need not remotely concern themselves with. Fate Realigned does alleviate some of that to a degree and has helped a bit..

But, it would be a better design if a few skills more dynamically consumed crux instead of always consumed all of them (ex tentacle max potency at 3 consumes one to cast, mid potency at 2, lowest potency at 1, weak at 0). If a few abilities worked that way that would also be a huge improvement, as it would more incentivize building to 3 and maintaining - instead of demanding build to 3, spend all 3 on repeat. Because also, that’s typically 3 GCDs, 3 skills with a cost, perhaps maybe a cruxweaver proc just to get your burst heal/shield to full strength. It’s a lot of hoops to jump through and you’re not really rewarded for it. It’s a class for masochists really.

I really like this idea of only consuming one crux at a time while still scaling with how many crux you currently have.

It would go a long way in nudging up the current damage kit, short of straight up buffing values or reworking and overhauling skills.

I think it’s wild the class isn’t getting anything this cycle and is left in its current state, especially when most classes are getting something. Sad to see for the newest class in the game, it’s time in the sun as even a shielded proc vessel was short lived.

The reason is because beam is good in pve, it overshadows the rest of the class kit leaving it overlooked despite the class being dead last in PvP performance. It’s the only class literally untouched this patch which I don’t quite understand when it’s arguably in the need of the most help. By and large the least played class in PvP.

Literally anything would be helpful, but mostly the sustain is just dogwater and where I think the class needs the most help.

It’s funny, most players I come across recognize all this and agree it’s glaringly apparent, and I’ve seen zero opinions arguing the contrary or that the class is in an even decent state. Which for this community is rare.

It’s playable. I do okay on it. But you have to jump through so many hoops to get it to work, you’re so much better off playing essentially anything else.

Arcanist is currently the weakest class in PVE atm too, so there's really no reason for the class to be completely untouched aside from fixing a huge bug that it had. Maybe they're worried about power levels with that mastery working properly now, but even at double its stated value, I'm pretty sure Arc is still a bad class atm.

Arcanist IMO was beautifully balanced when released then came the chopping block as it is with all new classes. It had unique skills and a great toolkit. Yes it did need a little trimming but not as much as what came.

That's only at the high end and even then, it's not "dumpster" cleave compared to arcanist. A casual player will do more damage with arcanist than with necro when playing without IA corpseburster set. Necro without corpseburster is actually worse than arcanist.

How much damage does necro do without corpseburster? And if morag tong didn't exist, arcanist is comparable. Maybe 10% less cleave with a 2x easier rotation. If tanks don't stack well, arcanist outperforms. Almost nobody prefers playing necro DPS in dungeons because it doesn't fare well in high mobility fights.

That's literally why? Why would you not want to play the class that takes half the number of inputs to provide a comparable output when that's an option? Arcanist is barely above oaken from an effort perspective.

I don't really understand your point. Arcanist is by far the easiest two bar build to play in the game, so when it was also at the top or very near it for damage, it'll obviously be the preferred route for people to go for dps.

It is brainless. I’m glad it made some content accessible for some people, but that one skill should not be the defining and overshadowing characteristic of the class. In PvP it’s a terrible skill. Tentacular Dread actually does offer the burst potential, but the rest of the kit drags the class down as a whole.

Fatecarvers prominence, or by some accounts former prominence in the pve space, had allowed this class to gather dust as a result even after sustaining substantial nerfs to its survivability.

This post is PvP context. I don’t care for the beam in PvP, it’s seldom viable. Latency and movement speed will always make it unreliable and there is no fixing that unless the skill was reworked altogether, which I don’t want - tentacular dread is fine as a burst/semispam substitute.

The class, outside of beam in pve, needs buffs.

Oh 100%. Arcanist is the best thing to ever happen to PVE. It made the endgame population vastly larger and more accessible, which is good for the game. I think the single target setup with runeblades and tentacular need to be buffed by substantial margins so that the class can be competitive with others as a single target cpm class as well as being usable in PVP.

I got the kill 20 arcanists quest in Cyro the other day and just instantly abandoned it because the class is so bad that I don't think there's 20 arcanists total in GH.

yes please if beam is so brainless why does everyone jump onto it when the going is good ? buff uup arcanist see how many wan to play other roles haha ? the brainless kind ?

That's literally why? Why would you not want to play the class that takes half the number of inputs to provide a comparable output when that's an option? Arcanist is barely above oaken from an effort perspective.

It made the endgame population vastly larger and most accessible, which is good for the game. I think the single target setup with runeblades and tentacular need to be buffed by substantial margins so that the class can be competitive with others as a single target cpm class as well as being usable in PVP.

I got the kill 20 arcanists quest in Cyro the other day and just instantly abandoned it because the class is so bad that I don't think there's 20 arcanists total in GH.

i think subclassing set that standard not arc i never met 2 arcs that play the same way myself in pve

Arc had like 2 years of outright dominance before subclassing even existed. Subclassing, if anything, was hugely detrimental to end game PVE. Arc was actually a good thing for the game.
