There are so many achievements connected to using the fence in specific zones that it kinda tempers it's usefulness for me which is unfortunate.

The major attraction of the Rooster is the fact that it can LAUNDER. Making it 100% more useful than the Fence you get from the Thieves Guild storyline.

With the Rooster, you never have to go a Thieves Guild to dispose of ill-gotten goods ever again. And there was much rejoicing...

I agree. I used him for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised. No more running through corridors in a thieves guild to get to a fence. :)

Yeah, Cambio is the whole shebang!

So much so, that while I appreciate getting him as a premium tome reward, I almost feel like I'm getting away with something I shouldn't have. He's so worth having that realistically his acquisition would merit having to complete an entire zone story questline to achieve, up to including a final "dayum that one was tricky!" boss fight.

It is not that he is a talking rooster. It is thst he is a neon-coloured talking rooster in a cowboy hat. That is Fortnite vibes, not TES.

Strange talking animals that are merchants is nothing new in Tamriel. One of the best traders in TES III Morrowind was a drunk talking mudcrab. Sadly he did not have a hat... Criminal...

I don't see the similarity, nor does this have a cowboy hat, but agree to disagree.

I don't think it's meant to be a 1 to 1 just that they're both green roosters. More an inspiration than a recreation. Just to clarify.

Agree. The Mexican rooster theme doesn't work for me, but I also don't have this merchant so I don't know what he's like.

Nice for the people who like it, but for me, it's too quirky for my taste.

Also, what's with giving characters overly clichéd names lately? We met a brutish woman called Abrasia (basically just "abrasion" with a female name ending) in the last Thieves Guild story, and now we get a fence called Cambio (which is the Italian, Portuguese and Spanish word for "exchange" as in "money exchange")? What's next? Evil McBadface?

This is a long-established device in fictional works called “significant/signifying/speaking names,” where onomastics intentionally reflect an identifying characteristic. (Apparently those terms weren’t enough, or at least not Greek enough, and it’s now also called charactonym by Merriam-Webster, though the OED doesn’t recognize that term.) It’s interesting to me that this can be felt to be cringey and uncreative in some contexts but deeply meaningful in others. I’ve never seen Aslan called out, for example. Felix (as in the cartoon cat) is a pun thousands of years old. Pangloss, Golightly, Milquetoast. Harry Potter is full of them. What makes one significant name (like Cambio) feel cliched but not these? Genuinely curious, since this device is ubiquitous in fiction and hardly new to the Elder Scrolls. Torbjorn’s name even makes Windhelm’s crest a canting device.

(ETA: Speaking of Torbjorn, he was prefigured by a more famous character in Beorn, from Tolkien, which can clue even middle schoolers into a spoiler for the plot.)

When I studied philology (which included literature history, linguistics, including historical linguistics, and rhetoric), I came across the term "aptronym" for that. I didn't study in an English-language country, though (I'm not even a native English speaker), so perhaps there are differences when it comes to the names of certain figures of speech (that's what it's called here anyway) in different languages.
    virtus753 wrote: »

I found Aslan for a lion a bit silly (Which does not diminish the quality of the overall narration, mind you; also it wasn't super obvious for most people, I guess, since most people don't know any Turkish?), and in Harry Potter it''s even worse (though not as bad as all those pseudo-Latin spells which I've already found, how the kids nowadays call it, "cringe", even when I was a teen myself). Felix? A pun, indeed. With Pangloss, do you mean the character from Candide? He was meant to be a caricature, a parody on the philosopher Leibniz. I can't say anything about the others, as I simply don't know their stories and the context they appear in.

But have you noticed a thing about your list? These characters who use such names are mostly from children's media, cartoons/comics, or used for parody characters. Is ESO a children's game or a cartoon, or are the characters here supposed to be parodies?

Also, I see a difference between metaphorical names, or clever names that require a bit of thinking (or literary, philosophical or mythological background knowledge) to understand an allusion - and outright calling a character by its function, just using a common different language for it. Calling a fence "exchange" but in Spanish feels neither interesting nor creative to me. As I said, that's like "Evil McBadface the evil and bad enemy". There's nothing smart or poetic about it. It's blunt.

If we talk about speaking names in ESO, why not utilize TES lore for it? We already know a bit about Ayleidoon, for example, which could be used for beautiful Altmer epithets that tell us more about that character, the values of that fictional culture, and the lore of the fictional world. This is what I would like to see, if speaking names are utilized - not "exchange" for a guy who exchanges stuff, or "abrasiona" for a violent bandit character.

Still a better name choice for such character than Zumog Phoom (whom we meet in Nothern Elsweyr).
