Buckle up, we just lost a huge piece of ESO dev team. I won't be naming them, sure everyone will find out soon. This is so messed up. 😔

No. It's not. IDK about the 50% number but one of our most public and senior devs just confirmed he got hit by the layoffs publicly. I'm not going to name names because it was a public post on LinkedIn but it's definitely real they just got hit hard by layoffs again.

Finn posted in his bluesky that he has been affected :(

Very sad news, apart from being an upstanding fellow he is behind some of the most infuriatingly fun encounters in the game.

Jason Schreier (spelling) is arguably the most “in-the-know” journalist in gaming and first reported on it. There have been anecdotes on Reddit of individual team members. You’re not going to get direct visibility until if/when the studio itself decides to address the elephant in the room though.

Really? I don't even understand what Microsoft's goal is, unless it's specifically to kill off ESO. The Encounters team was hands-down the best part of the game.

What does ESO still have left?

    Where‘s the 50%?

I‘m not saying there haven’t been layoffs, I’m saying 50% isn’t reported anywhere besides I have a friend working there who said this.

He doesn't say 50% but he does note it's a significant number. So, idk about such a large number but things are not good.

I worry what's going to happen to the world economy when the AI bubble bursts, which it will soon. People are going to figure out that AI really can't replace that many people or do that many tasks without making expensive mistakes. Most tasks that can be safely automated already are. Meanwhile we all suffer for the misguided investments of corporate overlords. This is so sad.

Really bad news. I see that she deleted some stuff. Previously it confirmed that half the team has been laid off, many active developers. From what I read, I'd assume all plans are up in the air now.

What does ESO still have left?

Their goal is to make mu' fu'n money, G! With companies going around with ludicrous trillion dollar IPOs and claims of hundred-billion dollar deals left and right for even the stupidest things do you think they are going to sit around looking at something bringing in a mere million dollars here and there and not consider it a rounding error?

In all seriousness though, I've been hinting at it for the last year, now. The game is under the sword of Damocles. Has been since the day Microsoft stepped in. They've been announcing cut-backs in all parts of their gaming section for almost two years now to the point where one wonders if they plan to even continue to have a presence in that sphere in the near future or just pull out entirely. I would expect the monetization to only become more aggressive and the content to essentially revolve around recycled systems and assets from here on out. It was already headed that way over the last four years to begin with but at this point it's probably more for the sake of survival than anything. They need to convince Microsoft that this product is all profit and zero liability.

    UPDATE:

Geeze, I just saw some of the names involved and its worse than I thought. I'd expect nothing but cash shop updates from here.

A developer who has basically no insight if it’s half of the team or whatever posting this on Bluesky is not a source I take for granted. If she doesn’t have insight into HR or they outright got a mail that states half of the team was let go then yes, the 50% were fired is still a nonsensical rumor and I don’t believe it.

    Just look at this thread:

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/695703/huge-layoffs-at-zenimax-a-lot-of-eso-devs-impacted#latest

There her statement already gets additional context. So half of the entire team is just wrong.

Microsoft is where companies go to die. Sometimes intentionally killed. Other times just grossly mismanaged.

Hard to imagine it being a 30 year MMO now, and sad to think it may never see all classes overhauled. It may just be "keep the lights on" for the foreseeable future.

There are a lot of hills to die on. Questioning if the layoffs are “50%” or “a significant portion of the team” should not be one of them. There are a lot of people out of a job today because the games industry is in employment crisis. Show some empathy.

I looked at the thread. The additional context is worse if you ask me. She adds that she's talking about the actual people working on it. The "half of its team" she's referring to is active developers working on content, events, and dungeons.

She specifies that she doesn't know about people in the studio at large. Personally I don't care if an extra layer of management is cut, but she is talking about half of the people with actual hands on our beloved game.

    That's terrible.
