So, this started out because everything I'd read had said 1 AP = 1 VP (Veterancy Point), but it was obvious from a casual observation that isn't the case. The factor appears to be anything from 1 up to nearly 4 VP per 1 AP depending on what you are doing. But I digress.
I want to talk about the actual mathematics that the server is being subjected to every time we earn AP, particularly in Cyrodiil given the strain of calculations that the server is under. I'm just looking at AP from quests as only the Gods know how player kills and keep captures determine their base value. So, how is AP calculated?
Well, I'm glad you asked. There's a base reward amount. For example, a simple Scout quest the amount is 500, and scroll capture gives 3,000.
So what buffs are in play?
- Enemy Keep Bonus
- Home Keep Bonus
- Edge Keep Bonus
- Buff Food/Scroll Bonus
- Vengeance Perk Bonus
- ESO+ Bonus
One would think that all those bonuses are all multiplicative or all additive for the sake of server performance. Except they are not. It's a 4 step process:
- Enemy Keep Bonus is added to the base amount first, and actually shows as the reward value for the quest.
- Home Keep, Edge Keep and Buff food are added together and then applied to the calculated Base + Enemy Keep Bonus after quest completion.
- Vengeance Perk and ESO+ then takes 10% of this separately.
- All 3 values are then added together.
i.e. this:

For a goal of reducing server calculations, this seems like an obvious choice for reworking. I'm not saying it would be a big performance gain, but it would be a gain surely?!
There are two points I'd like to also mention. Data Point #3. About 60s before I hit complete quest we'd taken and enemy keep and retaken control of all our home keeps. Yet, despite the bonuses showing in the Campaign Bonus menu, they were not applied to the AP rewarded. It threw my calculations off for the longest time, but I am functioning on not much sleep.
Updated to include Delve Buff. It adds in to the on-screen reward shown.

A note on low population bonus. I had a chance to see it briefly and it looks like that is a separate doubling on the final 3 values that get added together, but it seems odd. It doubles the AP before ESO+ which then gets the 10% from ESO+ which is then doubled again.
