Forced To Subclass?

Don't get me wrong, I am having a blast with subclass (despite any class ID arguments that may exist), but I think my main gripe right now is that I'm seeing that I'm pretty much forced to subclass if I want to do competitive DPS, which is fine, but still sucks for folks wanting to run a pure class setup for class ID purposes or simply because they like their class.

Is there no pure magicka sorc builds that can do similar DPS to a typical subclass setup (like Herald / Stormcalling / Nightblade for example)? Right now I'm rocking Herald / Storm / Ardent and having a blast. I realize that I could probably do more damage with Herald / Dawn's setup, but I just don't care for Templar or being top of charts, I just want to be somewhat competitive at least, so I don't have people insulting me or kicking me. You know how it goes.

So my question is, can a pure Sorc (my base class) run a solo-friendly build that can do competitive DPS with any of the meta Sorc/beam builds? I was running this for the longest time back in the day and it did well, but I'm pretty sure this would be left in the dust when compared to other meta/solo builds:

https://alcasthq.com/eso-solo-magicka-sorcerer-build-pve/

Right now I'm running basically this build, but using Ardent instead of Nightblade for third line:

Thoughts?

Can I modify this build to use Magicka and staves (with this same subclass combo: Herald/Storm/NB)?

your not forced to subclass unless your trying to be meta

and with how OP some of those class mastery passives are, you might be better of waiting to do a full build until the next update when pureclass comes back lol

For a year, our beloved characters have been rendered worthless in the name of a cherry picking system known as Subclassing. The same characters we were in end game and on leaderboards with, sent straight to the trash compactor. Subclassing needs to be removed. It should not be and never should have never been the meta. This is not Skyrim, WoW or any other game. Everyone who has ever purchased the game knows it is a Class based game. Its the first thing every player has to do when they start the game.

Anyone who advocates for Subclassing and says the character refreshes are fair or something theyre looking forward to is interested in cherry picking them to outcomepete the original Class. Its all you see and hear about in PvP. These underwhelming Class Mastery Passives are not on par with Subclassing. Instead of adding those, they should be reducing buffs and passives on Subclassing. Re instituting a rules based combat system and enforcing it. Combat is absolutely out of control. There is entirely way too much dps. No one should be able to put every buff on themselves without having multiple supports in a group. The Oakensoul Ring being the 1 exception. The awful combat exploit (Subclassing) has driven thousands of people away from this game. It is singlehandedly the worst update in the history of Eso.

I really hope that the DEVs will further enhance Class Mastery effects, because as of know (based on PTS) they are still nowhere nearby the power level of either the new DKs or those Subclassing meta sweats ruining everyone's PvP experience since some time :disappointed:

Mag Sorc main here and the short answer to your question is: “kind of”.

If we’re talking a PvE Mag Sorc that’s at least in the ballpark of competition with subclassed Sorcs then your best bet is the “ol reliable” buffed heavy attack strat. It’s likely going to be the closest to your goal that you’re going to get on Mag Sorc.

The reason Sorcs subclass is because our class skills are extremely dated; seeing them having incredibly clunky or long animations, excessive cast times for the scaling, or just poorer mechanics compared to other class skills.

Sorcs don’t have any instant burst spammable; rather, most of the time we have to rely on scribing or Destro staff for one.

Sorc skills, as a whole, don’t deliver on mechanics compared to what’s out there.

Sadly, IMO, that does the lore or class identity aspect of Sorcs zero justice; but numbers wise, it’s probably the most effective.

My PvE Sorc is subclassed and delivers on power, is fun to play, and has some lore elements factored in. It’s a shame I had to lean on subclassing but for now, it’s the state of the game.

Not to be antagonistic... but ESO has been actually majorly affected by Skyrim. If Skyrim was not released & such a success, the game would have been more like WOW than what it is today.

The gameplay is far more similar to Guild Wars 2 and Wildstar than it is to WoW. Skyrim's influence was what increased its spotlight and popularity, bringing people in using the Elder Scrolls title. When the game launched, it was extremely different from where it is now in terms of overworld interaction, but otherwise it was still an Action RPG.
May your crops be sun-blessed, sweet soul.

Which lines are you using? I'm trying to decide between a Templar-Necro or a sub-classed Sorc . The problem I have with the former is that going against lore rankles, and I can't see that combination being a thing lore-wise. A sub-classed sorcerer might make more sense.

I subclass every character, and I NEVER do it for meta--and neither do you have to! I subclass every non-NB with Shadow, so that I can just run past mobs and get all my quests done quicker. But also because I just love being stealthy. I've played some form of stealthy mage in every TES game, so subclassing is my favorite thing that ever happened to the game.

On my main, nightblade werewolf, I'm really considering dropping SC and going back to pure though, because two of those class masteries really give a lot of ult, and with WWolf 2.0 coming soon, I'll finally be able to swap between a stealthy mage and explosive werewolf at will.

But anyway, just play what you want, whether it's subclassing or not. Never let a game or community push you away from playing what feels like the most fun and in-character for you. "RPG FIRST, MMO second".

And if you do feel that pressure and it's too much for you--you get a free loadout swap.

I only have 1 subclass - a "more pets" build. My main is a Pet Sorc and I have played that, even though it sucks at PvP and is generally only OK at harder content.

I do wish we had a true hunter class that could tame pets, like in WoW, but I won't hold my breath waiting for that. (Though it would be a great class to add and would open up taming challenges and such.)

Yeah it sucks for PvP the meat right now is dk or subclass or die and if your class isn’t up next in the clas rework schedule your told to suck it up and suffer or go play another game because the game isn’t fun when your just not able to compete because the devs keeps Zosing and going about everything the wrong way like 1 class at a time over 2 years and a feature no one asked for (subclassing)
