My unmorphed skill is rank 2 while the morphed versions are fully ranked

I was going to change the morph of the nightblade execute skill Assassin's Blade on my main. I have both of the morphs fully leveled for years. It wouldn't let me change the morph. I had to remove a skill point through the 25k+gold skill change to see that the unmorphed version is only rank 2.

There was a lock icon on top of the skill so I couldn't just change the morph. I had to use skill change to see that the unmorphed version was only rank2.

I fixed the problem already but I thought I'd bring this issue to everyone's attention.

That happened ages ago when they swapped two skills in the NB line.

It's because each level of skill needs a different amount of XP to get to morphable. Assassin's Blade used to be the first skill, so if you morphed it it had a set amount of XP. But then they moved it to the third skill in the line, so internally it was 'missing' XP, which means if you ever removed the morph, you'd have to make up that missing XP.

What this means for the future though is that if ZOS is going to be swapping skills around in lines (like they said with the upcoming Class reworks), then any skills that swap will likely hit these problems.

Yeah I get it now. Thank you. I remember when the NB execute was the first skill in assassination tree and when they moved concealed/surprise attack/whatever the unmorphed skills is to the assassination tree, they changed the positions. It makes sense now.

No need to answer and bump this thread anymore.

So how does the game actually treat the skill if you still have the original version with the lock icon over it? Do you get the full benefit of the fully levelled morph, or are you effectively nerfed until you fix and re-level it?

Inquiring minds would like to know...

You have the fully levelled and morphed skill if you already had it. The only difference is that if you decide to unmorph it for any reason, you will need to make up the missing XP before you can morph it again.

I would hope that ZOS (or someone) makes this quirk well known, because if the upcoming Class rework involves switching skills around (which they have said it does), then this is likely to be a major issue every time, and I'm sure we're going to see a lot of these threads coming up.

Thanks! I was actually looking for this information recently, but could not get any sensible results from general search tools. So definitely seconded on that this could be better communicated to players.

    Hmmm...

Do you happen to remember which update it was? I'm thinking pre-46?
