How do I increase my damage?

s.barker1990b16_ESO
I keep getting kicked from vet dungeons for "not doing enough damage". What are some ways to increase my damage output?
I currently run the stamina templar build on xynodegaming and are pretty good at weaving my light attack with my spammable, keeping up my boons etc.
my armour is all purple CP160, 5 parts vipers sting and 2 parts leviathan. I'm champion level 382 currently

First of all, don’t use xynode’s builds. But which build in particular are you using? The “simplar”?

I would suggest poking around on skinnycheeks’ website. He really well explains all the details of DPS building and has subclassed and unsubclassed builds.

That said, if you want to keep your current setup as much as possible and just upgrade it I can try to help but will need to know what skills, cp, enchants, mundus, etc you’re running (why I asked which xynode build).

yeah it is the simplar build :)

i'm currently trying to match it so have the deadly stuff down (rings, belt and weapons) but not started on the tide-born stuff so have vipers sting for now

    How come?
I read the guide and watched the video and it seems a pretty solid and straight forward build

Xynode is decent for explaining mechanics of dungeons etc (at least he was when last I looked into his stuff), but his builds have always been known for being... well... to put it nicely... sub-par.

Hacktheminotaur has some ok builds for newer players and he does update them quite regularly, but he does tend to focus more on simple playstyles like heavy attack builds and 1 bar builds over 2 bar and weaving builds.

As mentioned above, Skinnycheeks is really good and does go in depth for a lot of his builds and does have builds for every class/role including sub-classed and pure class options for each. He is very end-game focused, but he does provide alternate options for his builds that are generally very easy to obtain for beginners (crafted sets, base game dungeon sets, etc.) and ways to progress the builds from there. Iirc he does also provide different champion point levels for his builds too, 300+, 600+, 900+, 1200+, etc.

As for your current build, I would swap it out completely as both sets (viper's sting and leviathan) are extremely outdated sets that are massively outperformed, even by crafted sets. I would suggest the following changes:
    1. Try to get Order's Wrath (crafted set) to pair with the deadly set if you cannot get tideborn. Order's Wrath should be easy to get from a guild store if you cannot craft it yourself.
    2. Look into a 1 piece monster set that grants crit chance (slimecraw is a common choice and extremely easy set to get 1 piece of).
    3. if you have antiquities unlocked, look into mythics to fill out the final slot. There's a few options, the shoulder mythic that grant lots of crit chance based on the number of mages guild lore books your character has read (forgot the name of the mythic) is a nice generic starting point mythic, Ring of the pale order is really good for doing solo PvE content (world bosses, etc) but can be a hindrance for group based content since the healers cannot heal you while you wear that mythic and it gets weaker the more people in your group, finally there's Velothi's Amulet that's the meta mythic for DPS currently.
    4. An addition to points 2 and 3 above, if you don't have antiquities, then a full 2 piece monster set is just fine as well (selene's monster set is still a decent option and not too hard to obtain if you don't have slimecraw or already have minor berserk in your build), or you could run the 1 piece monster set of choice and pair it with 1 piece of trainee for a nice bonus to health to help out defensively (won't directly help damage, but may help keep you alive to keep dealing damage).

One thing to note, while purple quality gear is fine for the armor pieces, you ideally want gold quality weapons at the minimum since the jump in base damage is massive between purple (approx 1100 base damage) and gold (approx 1350 base damage) quality weapons, so gold the weapons out asap if you haven't already.

The best thing I can suggest though is to test and tweak whatever build you do make/rotation you use, to help it fit better for you. Skinnycheeks' builds are good for this since he does go in-depth into a lot of the reasonings behind the skills/sets of his builds to help with understanding a build, but testing it yourself on a trial dummy, and practicing the rotations on world bosses etc. yourself, will help you to familiarize yourself with how it works and how to adapt it for your own playstyle, especially if you want to run a build that is not just arcanist beam spam.

@ESO_Nightingale me too... I tried one of his builds once when I was newer and that's the only time I've used a "youtuber" build haha. I really wish there was a way for us to knock down his site from being the top result. Same with alcast...

@Turtle_Bot his dungeon explanations are also not up to par. Part of why I've started writing my own guides that I post on the forum

@s.barker1990b16_ESO I see. Getting your gear swapped over will help a lot.
    • Instead of double precise, either do one precise one charged or one precise offhand nirnhoned (my suggestion would be the charged)
    • It's good practice to put "bar buffer" skills on the same place in both bars (in this case I'm talking about camouflaged hunter) but not required
    • Drop warden for assassination or herald of the tomb or even go back to full plar
    • I don't think bow backbar is ideal, 2h (usually sword) backbar seems to be popular right now

Fair enough, last time I checked his builds out was quite a few years ago, I found them very non-synergistic, or just flat out strange, so I quickly moved on to others for builds (especially since I was looking for PvP builds at the time).

Never truly looked into his dungeon guides myself, but I had seen comments in the past saying they were ok, but to be fair that was over a year ago now was the last time I had heard that and I haven't heard anything since.

It's hard to tell without seeing a video or a parse etc, but the most common mistake is that people don't press their buttons often enough. You are only limited by the global cooldown (1sec), which means you want to press a button once every second. If you are unsure what to press, just press something. Even if it's not optimal, it's much better than standing still and doing nothing or just spamming your light attacks/heavy attacks.
Pretty much all builds consist of damage over time skills (Dots) and spammables which only deal damage once per cast (or within one second like jabs or runeblades) with maybe an added effect on top. The core idea is to have your dots and buffs running at all times, and then filling the gaps with spammables, but always be casting something.
If you feel like two bars of dots and buffs is too confusing or overwhelming, you can switch some skills to longer lasting dots, or change them for a passive effect instead. Fighter's guild skills give passive 3% weapon and spell damage per skill slotted, so Camouflaged Hunter is very often used as a passive damage buff in most builds, because it also provides minor berserk and major savagery (note that the buffs only apply on the bar the skills are in, so it's recommended to have them on the front bar).

Don't take this the wrong way, but some of this is outside of your control. You won't be anywhere near max damage potential under the current system until you are champion level 1600 and you can afford to have 4 maxed out blue champion perks in your damage tree, so Part of this equation is just that you need to do more leveling. That is just something that will have to occur over time. I.E., there is no quick fix for that.

But I've seen low champion point level characters put out decent damage. But your going to need to put together some better damage sets because those sets haven't been good for DPS in a long time. If you can get the Oakensoul mythic, its a cheatcode to good damage. You equip that + Seargants Mail (dungeon set from Wayrest Sewers) + Storm Master (another damage set from Tempest Island) and you are going to crank out a lot of damage using heavy attacks with a lightning staff, regardless of CP level.

The next thing you need to check: make sure your weapons are golded out. There is a huge difference between having purple vs. gold weapons. Not so much the same thing for any other pieces of armor, but your weapons need to be gold to maximize DPS.

Then make sure your jewelry is set up for doing max damage. Bloodthirsty trait with max damage glyphs.

These things will improve your damage by a large margin.
