Honoring Julian LeFay (the Father of the Elder Scrolls)

For those that don't know, Julian LeFay was the chief creative behind The Elder Scrolls games of the 1990s (Arena, Daggerfall, and Battlespire). Some rumors from back in the day even suggest that Tamriel was a setting he created as a pen & paper game in the years before he joined Bethesda Softworks. He passed in July 2025.

As The Elder Scrolls series was Julian's most famous and lauded work, I think it would be quite cool and classy of ZOS to honor LeFay and his works by putting together some content themed around the divine "Julianos" -- the God of Wisdom and Logic named for Julian. Off the top of my head, an in-game holiday, or perhaps a permanent memorial or temple in the region around Daggerfall (the city-state which LeFay's most famous work was based around) would be wonderful.

If ZOS would ever want to go beyond that, Julian had certain designs in mind for the series that would always be cool to bring back around into the fiction. I've made a list of his known contributions and ideas below.
    • Julian invented the word "Tamriel"
    • Julian created an entire solar system for the skies above Tamriel, including a bunch of planets and things which have not been seen again since TES1
    • The Nords and Bretons were originally included in the series in reference to Julian's background as a Dane that spent much of his youth in France
    • Julian was a huge fan of Arthurian Mythoses, hence his sobriquet surname (after Morgan le Fay). The inclusion of the Fey Folk in the lore of TES2 was almost certainly related to his love of that sort of folk lore
    • Julian adored the Clyde Caldwell classic art style, as can be seen on the box art of Arena
    • Julian invented the "Daedra" as a concept, to get away from real world connotations associated with typical fantasy demons. Much of this was explored in Daggerfall and Battlespire
    • Julian liked to mix high fantasy or even science fantasy esque material with low fantasy material (see: the Battlespire and TES2's Numidium) for The Elder Scrolls worldbuilding -- the "Truth and Logic Style" already released perfectly fits with this
    • Julian designed the Battlespire spinoff game from the ground up, authoring most of the world building and lore associated with the spinoff game -- including the idea of the Empire of Tamriel maintaining many pocket universe institutions to host certain imperial societies
    • Julian invented the Direnni family of Bretons during the early development of TES2 (the best perspective on his vision for them would be lore about the Direnni of Caecilly from Battlespire), as well as the Camoran Usurper character (that led to the invention of the Camorian Empire and things)
    • The early games featured a lot of Japanese weaponry in homage to Julian's adoration for eastern fighting styles

Some misc info on Julianos from the lore...
    • Per TES2, Julianos has a temple called the School of Julianos (in reference to how religious institutes acted as schooling centers in real world history), which had a military order called the Knights Mentor
    • Julianos is associated with the Elder Scrolls themselves per the dialogue of TES3
    • Julianos is said to be a part of the original Aedra that rebelled against Lorkhan / Shezarr per Mankar Camoran's dialogue
    • Check UESP's page for more information!

I second this, it would be a wonderful tribute to the man who brought us all here today. I feel like Zenithar got a lot of coverage with Blackwood and Zeal of Zenithar, so Julianos could also get an event similar to that. Perhaps we could also get a statue of Julianos with a likeness modeled off Julian as well if that's permitted. I would support any tribute to him

While it is very neat that this year's "morphing collectable event" and player home has coincidentally been themed around Julianos already, I think we ought to go further than that and do something directly about celebrating Julian and his contributions to The Elder Scrolls.

I've created a thread on Reddit to further this discussion: [Discussion] Honoring Julian LeFay -- the original creator of The Elder Scrolls

I do think and agree that something more than the yearly FOMO items would be a more fitting tribute for Julian.

Perhaps an npc priest of Julianos called Julian, LeFay or outright Julian LeFay can be placed at a chapel to the Divines or the chapel of Julianos in Skingrad.

Maybe a lorebook found in similar locations honoring him, or a free (non FOMO) cosmetic (be it a emote, outfit, costume, etc) referencing him can be made, obtainable at anytime through a short quest or something of the likes.

Or just one of the many various random shrines ESO has made and added to the worldspace to honor other deceased people. ZOS could go a step further and try to honor the entirety of the Council of Wisdom alongside Julian if they went the lorebook route as well.

Either way doesn't have to be anything big, but would be touching to see Julian immortalized in ESO someway.

Hey ZOS, would it be possible to get some Julianos themed content / events in future (Julianos being the god named for Julian LeFay-- the original creator of the Elder Scrolls series)? I think that would be a very nice way to honor him, in a big way or small way.

That would be a very nice gesture, and an amazing tribute.

DDO has an overland graveyard, that mainly exists to provide entrance to a couple of dungeons, and as a stage for the halloween event. When Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson passed, each got a monument in that zone. But well, that was something the devs did out of their own initiative, had they done it only after the players asked for it, it would have felt hollow.

In SWTOR, players of both factions spontaneously gathered in Organa Castle on Alderaan to memorialize Carrie Fisher. The devs "hijacking" that initiative would have felt wrong. That's really a no-win situation for the devs, better to do nothing and seem ignorant than being accused of trying to profit from someone's death, while also setting expectations for the future.

I disagree entirely. I think that's kinda overly puristic of you to say. As long as whatever is done is done thoughtfully and sincerely, I don't see why they couldn't honor his works more directly in the future -- if not honor the man directly. There are any number of tasteful ways of honoring someone's life and creation, big or small, directly or indirectly.

Thank you for creating this thread, an in-game tribute would be a great idea and a very moving gesture to honour them and their work. Something that is a permanent addition to the game, a monument, a shrine, a lorebook, like some comments suggested above are all nice ideas, I hope the devs will consider them.

@ZOS_Kevin @ZOS_GinaBruno Just pinging to put this on the devs' radar, hopefully you have time to read the full thread, Julian's birthday is October 30th. If we could perhaps get a statue memorial for Elder Scrolls co-creator Julian LeFay (memorial near Vivec City comes to mind, or the bear in Cyrodiil, and so on); putting a tribute memorial like that near Daggerfall for his birthday would be very thoughtful. He would have turned 60 this year. With enough time to design it, maybe one day we can get a Julianos-themed event like the Zeal of Zenithar, but for now a memorial of some sort would be much appreciated.

There are many wonderful ideas in this thread, as well as on reddit, hopefully you folks get a time to look at them and pass these ideas along to the other developers. Thank you

I was just thinking, there's a lot of empty space around Daggerfall, what if they just put a Julianos statue there with a dedicated plaque? u7qdcre2c1l2.png

Could also put it in the basement of the city's Chapel if that's easier
