Was a devastating message to read from Ted earlier today. All the thoughts are going to Julian and his family, sadly knowing how it is very well.

I only came to Elder Scrolls with Oblivion but without those guys who worked on Arena and Daggerfall there wouldn't be any Oblivion, Skyrim, or ESO.

    Respect.

Same, I began my Elder Scrolls experience with Oblivion, followed by Morrowind and Skyrim. The first time I tried Arena, after it became free to download and play, I gave it about 10 minutes before giving up in frustration. Years later, I tried it again and fell in love with it. Eventually I tried Daggerfall and came to love it as well, once I got the hang of using the automap and how to understand the minimap.

The Elder Scrolls is definitely my favorite fantasy RPG series, and I'm deeply grateful to Mr. LeFay for his vision and hard work at creating a world that provides me with so much pleasure. <3

:'( ...still searching for words. It made me sad and i wish him and his family strengh and warmth in this days.

Looking at the Julianos window makes me think of an Julianos Furnishing Statue. So Julian could always have a place in the homes of "his sons and daughters" as lasting memory.

Julian, we will never meet in person. But just know that you have made my life better. As as you have made the lives of so many with the countless people that you have inspired, entertained, and comforted through troubled times with your imaginative and wonderful creations. You have left a mark not just on Tamriel as Julianos, but on our hearts here on Earth too.

Some of my favorite memories from gaming have been from the Elder Scrolls Franchise. I hope that you're surrounded by as much comfort and love as is possible during this your final hour. These games have allowed me to kick some furry backsides when I've been stressed or angry. Allowed me to see some wonderful sights when I've been too ill to leave my room. And to laugh when I needed a laugh most. They have even inspired me to create art of my own at times!

And none of that would be possible without you. You will not just be missed but you will be celebrated by the mark you've left so many of us who play your games. So, from the bottom of my heart, Thank you!

    Fight the Good Fight Julian.

I have enjoyed your games since the begining. I have been with you since Arena. Spent many a sleepless night battling the hordes you have created or tweaking my character until it is just so. Thank you, so much.

Whether it is Sovngarde or the Aetherius, may your next adventure be rich and varied.

I can’t argue with the success of the series and the fact that it’s well-made for what it is. What it is now, however, is not what I intended with the series. That doesn’t make it wrong or bad, of course, just different. I would have liked to see TES become something different from every other RPG, something that strive for an experience closer to pen-and-paper RPGs rather than a CRPG, even if it is better than most out there.

By what it is, he meant everything post-daggerfall.

Personally, I'm glad TES moved away from a more paper-and-pen-RPG type of experience. To me, one of the most frustrating aspects of those types of games is how everything comes down to the roll of the dice. There is still some of that in the later TES games, especially in ESO with things like loot drops and the chance to obtain some sought-after piece of gear, lead, rare material, or whatnot-- and look at how much love that gets from the players in these forums. But especially with things such as fighting and lockpicking, or even just conversation, the earliest TES games don't bring much sense of personal skill into the mix; you try to hit something with your weapon, or pick a lock, or even just try to improve how someone feels about you in conversation, and it's all a matter of what the roll of the dice says. In contrast, lockpicking in Oblivion, Skyrim, and ESO feels like your personal skill is actually making a difference in the outcome.

Thank you for creating a world as diverse, beautiful, and vibrant as Elder Scrolls. I have spent many hours there, fighting monsters, fighting other players, crafting, harvesting, searching for treasure, decorating my houses, and just admiring the scenery. Thank you for the Khajiit, my favorite race and the characters which I enjoy playing the most. The Elder Scrolls games have been a part of my life for many years now, and I feel sad when I think of the friends I would have not met and the adventures I would not have had if they never existed.

Tamriel has been home for near 25 years. It's lore grabbed me in a way that rivaled Tolkien.
Thank you good sir for not just fantastic games, but the world in which they came alive.

For those who don't know, in the Elder Scrolls lore, the god Julianos is named after Julian LeFay.

    From Bethesda on X

It’s with great sadness we learn of the passing of Julian LeFay. He was the driving force in the creation of The Elder Scrolls and the foundations of Bethesda as a game studio. Simply put, without Julian, we would not be here today. If you had the opportunity to work with Julian, you were blessed to know a one-of-a-kind force of nature, who pushed everyone to create something special. His work and spirit will live on both in our memories and in our games.

All the old-timers were big Glorantha fans - some of you will be old enough, or deep enough into classic rpgs, to know what that is and why it's one key to why Elder Scrolls has always been so awesome. Also worth mentioning that Larry Schick, who left ESO in 2019, was the author of "White Plume Mountain" and an early employee over at TSR. These guys have lived a life in gaming.

Much love, Julian. Thanks for everything.
