Scribing Confusion

In playing around with Scribing, I have noticed some oddities... flame damage never seems to add flame damage, despite saying it does. Frost damage never seems to add frost damage, despite saying it does. Shock damage? Same.
What's up with that? I even attach to the destructive staff grimoire, and it's just magic damage. How do we actually get true elemental damage types with Scribing?

✭✭✭✭✭If you're putting them on the destro staff grimoire, the damage will match the type that is being added - flame damage turns the Elemental explosion into Fiery explosion, which does flame damage.
The one that's weird is the banner, which will buff certain damage types (e.g. magical/martial/DoT/etc) based on the banner used.1
