What's the point of jumping?

After playing other games, the jumping height in this game is severely low, what's the point of having the jump at all?

I mainly use jump when on horseback to get over hedges and streams that might make me dismount. I can sometimes use it off horseback to jump over hedges and low fences, but that can be hit or miss.

When the game was released, it sometimes was important when playing a Bosmer - so you could reach some levers or buttons at all (and sometimes even that didn't work).

There are various uses of jump in combat situations, also it makes the game feel more immersive compared to just running up ledges or being stopped by a small rock on the ground unable to bypass it.

It is the main way to move over small rocks, obstructions, and small height differentials in the game. Without it, most players would just be stuck running against something that they can't see. There is a stairway in Ebonheart that probably catches everyone trying to run up the stairs during the New Life Festival. Without jumping, I think half the players would still be there.

It’s to get over that tiny pebble that your character is seemingly unable to just step over and gets stuck in place.

Jumping over walls & water (that’ll make you dismount), annoying people in PvP, chaining enemies that are behind what’s directly in front of you, jumping for joy, getting on top of wayshrines, playing leap frog…

Sometimes I jump a few times after a boss fight to thank my teammates. They jump too, and then everyone goes their own way. A kind of chatless communication. :)

I can't imagine where this question comes from! Jumping is useful for avoiding obstacles in one's path!

I jump pretty regularly for practical reasons, especially in pvp where the environment is more of a factor in combat.

What do you find the game lacks in terms of jumping? Perhaps it's the lack of jump puzzles? It's probably because this game doesn't have great jump physics, especially because it's pretty easy to do an unintended super jump.

Also, they would be really tedious in many cases because so much content in this game is designed to be replayed up to dozens of times.

    • I've often seen it employed as a quick and easy troubleshooting solution, short of a command like /stuck (usually in games where such commands aren't a given).
    • Despite being an ancient practice, crouching/jumping in front of someone is a way of communicating friendliness (or taunting) before the advent of the written or spoken word.
    • It's definitely because I protested for Acrobatics and Athletics coming back to ES in some way (there are dozens of us! DOZENS!), and we compromised when ZOS added jumping and gave me a coffee. Well, I say they gave me one, they threw one at me and called security. But that's neither here nor there.

In pvp, it dodges some spells. Apart from that special oddity, ditto with what has been posted, intersting replies here

There are mechanics in contents that requires you to jumping after all. Also without jumping not sure how we can make houses easily.

Not only that, when the game released when jumping you kept your speed and momentum, meaning you could actually use the jump to get to places. Now it resets the momentum and speed. Only sometimes, like a bug, can you jump at sprint speed.
The same resets happens when you trip on a single step of stairs or a small stone on the ground and "fall" for a few centimeters.

The jump mechanics in this game leaves a lot to be desired though. Now a game like "Elden " has what I call a good jumping mechanic.

Here, my char is struggeling to jump over the tinies of objects at time. And why? Because you are too close... sigh. Annoying really.

it's been a feature since at least fallout 3.

the devs are obsessed with players' feet, imho.

they just love watching players get pitched sideways instead of jumping over an obstacle. even a simple curb on a walkway can become a challenge.

It drives me crazy that jumping doesn't adhere to velocity, momentum, or any aspects/rules of physics.

Regardless of speed buffs or boosts, when you're running or sprinting at full speed and then hit jump, it's like a cutscene from The Matrix because your body immediately slows down to your base unbuffed speed.

    climbing

often you can get up and over one of the million rocky walls you run into by a series of jumps, working your way to the top

Good question tho. I'd love to see jumping play a role in (PvE) mechanics to avoid DMG and so on. It's sad ESO is missing on this.

Jumping has its place in PvP and actually serves a purpose there. But that's a different thing.

Still glad to be able to jump in general. Would feel bad without.
