Saw something new in Rawalkia last night

Just Northeast of Rawalkia on the other side of the creek I saw what looked like an orange Oblivion Portal with an NPC fighting a Frost Atronach. I killed the Frost Atronach and the NPC walked into the portal without saying a word. I've never seen any portals in Reaper's March and I've been playing since Summerset. Something new?

I think these were added with Blackwood/Deadlands? They're pretty rare encounters that can pop in most designated random NPC encounter spots.

Those have always been in the game. There's a few different varieties of them.

I've seen summoners, but not with an Oblivion portal.

Now that I think about it, I have run into these before.

Yesterday I was playing in Alik`r I think and came across some worm cultist and killed them, got some really good stuff. The point i`m making is, if you see something check it out. Might get some lore, might get some goodies or both.

I'm sure I've seen them in other older zones also just not in this one. Darn, was hoping maybe ZoS started adding some new interactions to older content.

These Summoners just walk away without a Thank You or a How Do You Do. Kind of makes me want to Aggro them...

That's why sometimes I just walk on by and leave them to deal with the trouble they wrought.

These summoners have always had Oblivion portals. They do their summoning ritual while commanding the doors to Oblivion to open wide (or something like that; I forget the exact wording), then an Oblivion portal appears and some miscellaneous Daedra come out of it-- Flame Atronach, Frost Atronach, Scamp, etc. After you kill the Daedra, the summoner thanks you very much, opens a regular portal, and limps through it while holding his left arm with his right hand.

Encounters such as this, and there are many others, spawn in place of treasure chests to add flavor to the world.

I though these random encounters helped rapport for Bastion and came out about the same time.

I went to pick up a woodworking survey in Shadowfen during the week, and found a quest marker I'd never seen before. Have collected that survey many times. Was a quest about poison gas. Wondering when that was added.

That's been in there from the beginning. It's just easy to miss because it moves around. Even knowing it exists, it can be hard to find sometimes.

Yeah, I do encounter these portals on occasion. The weirdest thing I have encountered was a werewolf in the city of Daggerfall, in Glenumbra. It was just outside of the Daggerfall Cathedral, slowly walking down. Very strange, so I dealt with it, got some cold and low end armour. But this was the first for me, a werewolf in a city.

I once read that some npcs turn into werewolves if attacked (or turned aggressive because they caught someone stealing from them) - do they turn back to humanoids after a while or do they remain in werewolf form? If they don't change back, maybe that's what you saw: The attacker or thief fled and the npc returned to their normal schedule, without changing back to human.

At the Windhlem wayshrine in Eastmarch, there's a vampire spawn that will occasionally show up just munching on something. I assume it's finishing off an unfortunate player who went afk after porting there.

You will sometimes come across 2 or 3 NPCs in a group near some dead bodies saying something like, "Phew, that was close." If they spot you, they turn into werewolves and attack. I've come across them a few times, although I don't remember where.

Isn't there also that city where there's a monster (werewolf) attacking the refugees/beggars and you can volunteer to sort it out for the guard? I wonder if that character is always there or only spawns if you pick up that specific side quest?

It's a random encounter and can happen in all basegame zones (there's spots on the maps where they can occur, but it's really a dozen of different places or so). Usually not in or near cities, though.

It would probably also spawn visibly for you if another player just does that quest? But I can't really remember anymore where that quest even was.

There's also the duelling mages you can run across; if you interrupt them, they both attack you.

    Found it: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Back-Alley_Murders

So yes, it's in Daggerfall (Glenumbra) - seems to fit.

Funny, I was going by the exact same spot this weekend and same thing occurred. Summoner and a portal. Like others have said just walked into the portal and didn't even say thanks. I go by this spot EVERY day, I do my dailies, and kill some mud crabs right there. Never saw one since 2019 and now two in a week. Makes me wonder if small tweaks are being added to the older zones.

As been stated, they have been in the game since launch. I've have seen them everywhere all the time. Reaper's March has been my home zone since I started playing too, definitely have seen them there more often. How people have played since launch and not run into them is weird to me.

I can remember seeing it on a woodworking survey in Shadowfen, some years back now.

    Edit for typo....
