Why are some of the Old Life Shrines so far away...

For new players with unlevelled or partially levelled mounts this is a massive frustration and is surely a turn-off which is not what ESO needs.

Wait... you can buy Riding Lessons from the Crown Store?

Some of them actually are not as far as they look but you have to go to a connecting zone and go through the gate to do the shortest route.

So many conspiracies regarding the monetization. I don't think that much thought and effort went into an annual event that hasn't change in several years.

That quest has been that way from Year 1. Back then nobody had super-speed. The quests weren't designed to be knocked out as quick as possible.

Edit - Wow, I really remembered that one wrong.

The mount training really should be changed so that it is no longer on cooldown, but at an escalating cost such as the bank space and bag merchant.

Old Life quests weren’t added until 2020, at which point we had all mounted speed boosts presently in game except Gifted Rider (10% additive with Major Gallop and then multiplicative with everything else).

(I’m forgetting if CP 1.0 had an equivalent. Windrunning was much less, iirc, also did movement speed, and I never tested whether it behaved the same way anyhow.)

I mostly remember it was added later only because I remember people commenting when they found the shrines themselves added to the game before the event announcement about them was released. It’s always neat to me when people discover things like that.

a bunch of us just did the one in Stonefalls and on my way back met a couple of 'em that hadn't even made it past halfway. lol.

Imagine being a new player at a low level with no access to any speed boosts and having to go through this tedium!

Cause at this point it feels like all of the New Life and Jesters festival quests have been in the game since Morrowind was released.

I remember the Old Life Remembrance was added in 2020 because I actually cried a little. 2020 was a rough year for my family and we lost multiple people due to the pandemic. It was....such a touching and heartfelt addition to the game at the time. And it feels really poignant too whenever Varen shows up now too, as we have lost his VA IRL. This is just such a beautifully done quest.

This would be absolutely amazing. Kind of wish they'd do the same thing for Trait research. Keep the scrolls for Mount leveling and Trait research for people who are richer irl than in-game and stuff, but give us the ability to circumvent annoying timers by paying with both in-game and irl currency.

Yes, I'm disappointed in the community of this game... I understand the casualness, but this is already absurd... Maybe it's better to remove the open world in principle? Let everything be in one small room.

It's always been like it I'm afraid. Ultima Online in the 1990s, the GMs would put on big story events, not that you could see the story as half the people there would be spamming the screen with "give me free event item mrmgmrmg!" Couldn't wait for the GM to tell the story, had to naff up the screen for everyone. Blargh. I'm gonna go outside and shout at a cloud.

What tedium? When I played ESO for the first time, I was enjoying the new scenery so much I didn't even notice my mounts were slow or that I had to search for wayshrines to use them for the first time.

No it was not always like this. Take the early MMO's like Everquest and WOW. There was nothing easy or instant about them although WOW today has evolved to be more instant.

They are supposed to be a bit removed from everything, that's part of the lore. If they were near a wayshrine you wouldn't have to find it.

I had a lot of fun the year they were added running some lowbie alts out to find them. Exploration is one of the things I still find the most fun in, in this game and the single player titles (other than Morrowind).

I think mount training and trait research are okay as they are, let them stay character specific. We regularly get free scrolls for mount training and trait research in our daily login rewards. Right now I've got over 60 riding capacity, over 60 riding speed, and over 30 riding stamina scrolls from all of the free rewards, plus over 40 each blacksmithing, clothing, and woodworking scrolls, and just shy of 90 instant all research scrolls, none of which I bought from the Crown Store.

Everquest players tried to take any shortcut available to avoid the game-forced tedium. That's why a druid could make a pretty good living selling SoW, an enchanter selling KEI, and wizards selling gates. Even back then, those "hardcore" gamers wanted things less tedious. Games today just realized that forced tedium does not equal good gameplay.

This. And lordy I made so much gold in Guild Wars 1 selling runs from Lions to Forge. Just because the MMOs were not instant, didn't mean the players didn't optimise the heck out of playing and rush through content like a road runner.
