Game crashes when setting graphics preset

Hi,

so after patching in update 44, I noticed that my overall graphics settings were set to "Custom". When I try to set them back to "Extreme" (as they were since months ago) or even "High", the game reloads for quite a while and then crashes to desktop. I am not even able to determine what the actual difference between my "Custom" setting and the "Extreme" setting is as all sub-settings are actually identical.

Can anyone help?

Just to check, have you tried all of the steps in this article? If not, please try them and let us know if they help.

yes, I tried all of them, I even disabled the options mentioned in that article totally resp. set them to the absolute minimum. Also tried windowed mode instead of fullscreen - nothing helped: After hitting "Apply", the game reloads for quite a while, then crashes to desktop each time. So it seems that the only way to get the game running is to leave all video options as they all of a sudden were ("Custom") after the update patch.

As I said, I used to play the game with the video preset "Extreme" for at least 1.5 years without any problem, and now it doesn't even start using the lower preset "High", although those working "Custom" options that have been active since Update 44 are even better/higher than those of the "High" preset.

It simply doesn't make any sense.

Just to let everybody know, deleting the "UserSettings.txt" file was the solution here. After doing so, I experienced a couple of game launches with no sound, but eventually, I was able to start the game with sound and without any crashes. Just play around after deleting that file, and eventually, it will work. I was able to set the graphics preset to "Extreme" instead of the dreaded "Custom" setting.

Thank you for sharing what the solution was. But I must know-- what is so "dreaded" about the "Custom" setting?

It was just "dreaded" because I wasn't able to change it to any other preset. Whenever I tried to do so, the game was reloading and reloading before it eventually crashed - and went back to the "Custom" setting after the next start, probably as some sort of fallback. Which was extremely strange because I wasn't able to find out which sub-setting was actually responsible for those crashes. It seemed like something was simply broken.
Now I've at least achieved something like a "clean start".
