Can someone explain to me why U43 requires 30 gigabytes?

I read the patch notes. The significant additions are Home Tours, additional Endless Archive content, and a handful of amenities such as a purchasable scribing altar and new class sets. I'm assuming that Home Tours takes up the bulk of this space requirement since it's the face of U43, but 30 gigabytes? For something that - in my opinion - is a redundant addition given that we can already link houses in chat and invite players to travel to our houses, 30 gigabytes is ridiculous.

I use my PC for various pursuits, and for ESO to be demanding what I last checked to be 10-15% of a terabyte hard drive, it is on a fast track to being something I can no longer afford to play. Even now, I am scouring my files for things I can delete in order to make space for an update I cannot currently download, and I'm coming up with megabytes worth of disposable files. I've been pretty adamant to people I talk new content with that Home Tours is a redundant feature that nobody *really* needs given the currently available options for sharing houses with other players, and that it unnecessarily bloats the size requirement for this game.

There is already so much content in ESO that does not fit my playstyle, and now we have Home Tours AND some PvP update coming in at the end of the year - what am I supposed to do then? This game needs serious optimization far more than it needs new, redundant content. ZeniMax, PLEASE, figure something out.

It's not actually adding a full 30gigs on top of what the game already is. The update is affecting 30 gigabytes worth of files, but the actual amount of new files it's adding may be negligible.

It's just that the update algorithm was implemented poorly. The client reserved additional disk space in the amount of about 30 gigabytes, but after the update he returned them back

When you update a file, you need to replace the whole file, even if it's the same size (or even smaller!) than before. Hence the need to download so many GBs of stuff.

Instead of the older downloading, and applying patch,it now only shows updating,so is showing the size of all the files total affected. If you watch,it'll jump alot, and is about 1.5-2GB really downloaded.

The only way I was able to successfully download the update in the end was by completely uninstalling ESO and reinstalling it, which took about two hours and left around 25 gigabytes of space on my PC. So, yeah, a lot of you are right: the update was actually pretty small.

Still, there's a need to fix the update procedure if it's blocking an update about 5 gigabytes large simply because I don't have 30 gigabytes on my hard drive - that's ludicrous when you do the math.

There are other assets besides what's in scope for the patch, which is usually how we get datamines.

While that is valid, it could still fall under the redundancy category: how much of those assets do you think are reskins?

My guess is that one of the reasons for the patch's size is the addition of the scribing altars at the cyrodiil bases, as well as the terrain modifications to prevent getting stuck in cyro. It's a massive zone and updating it would (I assume) require the whole 'file' for the map to be re-downloaded.

    ^^This ^^

But also, as they aren't doing a cherry pick patch. In other words, the devs time is worth more than your hard drive space ;) .

    #lazy packaging.

But... ode to the data mining overlords.

Did you know that 1gig of downloaded data produces 3kg of CO2 emissions. And 1kg of CO2 emissions is around the same amount of CO2 taken to drive a car 3.7km.

    Well now you do ;)
