The games pretty much designed to play how you want, the only problem I have is when a character dies or disappears forever in a dlc, they're magically alive and well in another storyline.
there's extra quests at the end of the Markarth story if you also did the Greymoor story.
and Lyris, who has a side quest in the Reach with Sai Sahan, is also in Greymoor.
yea it's worth doing if you already started Markarth. i dont think there's any characters that appear in both zone stories.
i think you can do Dragonhold before Elsweyr as well.

On eso website there is info that dark heart of skyrim storyline starts with harrowstorm update but from what i understand it, it is just a couple of dungeons, right?
Open world, dark heart of skyrim starts with greymoore expansion, if i understood you correctly.

yea harrowstorm is two dungeons.
yea overland dark heart of skyrim starts with Greymoor.
there's also the Greymoor prologue quest though.
and there's the stonethorn dungeons which take place before Markarth's prologue.
Gwendis has a side quest in Greymoor which is in Blackreach. not necessary for anything, but you get extra dialogue about it in the quests after it i think.
Thanks for clarification.
That is correct.
It's not really necessary to do Greymoor to understand the events in Markath, but I'd do Greymoor's story at least once.
Greymoor's (Western Skyrim's) main story is part 1 of what follows in Markarth. BUT Greymoor's story is also one of the worst pieces of writing in ESO. Markarth is the barely redeeming bit and you should be able to figure out what came before. In this instance, I wouldn't say you're missing out.

So which zones/expansions are the best when we are talking about the quality of writing?
At the moment I am doing Clockwork City.
