Maintenance for the week of December 23:
• NA megaservers for maintenance – December 23, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 9:00AM EST (14:00 UTC)
• EU megaservers for maintenance – December 23, 9:00 UTC (4:00AM EST) - 14:00 UTC (9:00AM EST)

cyrodiil performance is out of control

For the last couple of weeks it feels awful. Maybe whatever test they did, which would be sad. Maybe more people playing during the holiday, which would also be sad. Maybe some other thing. Who knows, but all around its sad and unplayable.

And just to be clear its always been bad. The hardware refresh helped it for like a month, even though zos likes to pretend that it fixed everything for everyone. It did not. But these last couple of weeks or so it is like an all time low. Plenty of people complaining about it in zone chat. Whatever you did please undo it.

Even as im typing this people are complaining in chat, and i just fled gray host to go to blackreach so thats a reassuring thing to see as i sit at the gate. Very nice.

Dunno if it's related but I and many of my friends have noticed something's been really "off" for the last couple weeks in PvE-land too. REALLY weird desync in IA especially, but also in dungeons and elsewhere. People getting booted a lot. Everyone I know has been commenting on it. I can't imagine what that's like in PvP.

Here is what GH looked like Monday night. 5-10 second skill delays, essentially 0 ability functionality whatsoever on and off straight through the night.

Not sure I have ever seen lag this bad.

ya thats what im saying. like my ping jumps to 999 sometimes, and other numbers, but i have never seen it just sit at 999 or super high for like 20 minutes straight. While others are complaining about lag. Then i ported out to craglorn and it was fine. This games performance is utterly perplexing. Any other game is fine. Most other zones are normally fine. Sometimes other players are fine when you are playing a picture book. Its like cyrodiil is just fundamentally flawed at its core.

But ya it just gets soooo old dying when you should not be dying. Its so boring. That clip is a solid representation of things though.

And then people start to complain when they do an 8 hours maintenance to restart servers after running three weeks straight to make everything smooth again and all just because ZOS wanted to have holidays too, how dare..

that has never been a problem or solution to the performance. If thats all it took to make performance better trust and believe every pvper would say take the servers down for 24 hours if need be. Whatever they need. No, this is probably nothing to do with performance, but if they do something to help it ill be happy. But i doubt it. Even when its not abysmal like it is now, its normally pretty bad. But at least if its back to what it normally is after restarting then it will be better than what it is now.

And people always complain about maintenance no matter what its for. Its just one of those things on the forums unreasonable people like to do.

I fear they may have reduced the population cap even further, like maybe down to 60/faction as a result of the tests. But time will tell. It's hard to judge during the holidays when so many extra people have time to log onto the game. But it times of the day when the pops used to show 1 or 2 bars continue to show 3 or 4 bars going forward, we'll know they reduced the pop caps yet again.

I've been feeling those things since the last major patch. Frequently. Heck I have my abilities QUEUING in delves...
Only time I would see performance that bad is when I play on PC-EU (Normally play NA, east coast.) and even then on EU its not common.
Latency is a bit higher on EU but at least it feels consistent.
On NA its been consistently sluggish for awhile now.

We all know there is a memory leak, and I have seen people suggest that it is potential a server thing as well. The longer the servers run without being restarted, the worse it gets. My understanding is that this is a result of very poorly optimized code, which it seems like they have no intentions of fixing anymore since the last update we got on the now two year long "code rewrite" was that they've made no progress and have no eta for completion.

This past weekend into Monday night was the worst performance I think I've seen. It was as bad as pre server upgrade at least, and maybe worse. However, after the 8 hour maintenance which Kevin stated "was a server restart after the holidays", the lag was noticeably better. When I say noticeably better, I mean still laggy but typically 1-2 second delays with longer delays near large fights, not like what you saw in my clip above. Really still unacceptable performance, but undeniably better than before they restarted the servers. This lends merit to the idea that there is a severe memory leak of some sort which gets worse over time.

Unfortunately since this primarily impacts cyrodiil, they'd never see bi-weekly restarts as a viable option. It impacts too many non-PVP players for it to be an acceptable workaround.

It's a shame really, but their lack of communication these past two years coupled with the steadily declining performance point to them simply not intending to do anything further to improve PVP.

Well i guess at least its better then. For now. It was certainly abysmal recently, to be sure. I never put those 2 things together, like a restart meaning slightly better performance. But im never one to keep track of down time, or what they are for. Aside from bigger updates. But you would knowing the possibility of that issue would make it easier for them to try and fix it to see if it helps. Not that we would know.

And i almost had forgotten about the code rewrite. I almost feel like they called it something different at one point, but maybe im mistaken. They have tried so many things that have done nothing. Its very unfortunate.

try and hide it as much as you like, its no secret to anyone. I highly doubt this category was meant for these types of discussions. This is game performance in general, it just shines most in cyrodiil. But good time well spent on your part im sure.

Yesterday I was passing by large battle near Bleakers (PC EU, Gray Host), I actually tried to avoid it, bcs yes, I'm aware of the lags. But - I heard battle sound and saw some light splashing and after getting 999+ ping, 0 fps and a few seconds of watching a static picture I've found myself dead laying among other dead bodies and fighting people. After resurrection I made a few steps away from the shrine, my health bar started to melt again without any source of incoming damage and I fell dead again with PVE options of resurrection - wayshrine on soulgem, and both did not work, so I had to force shut down the game with Windows options.
This thread is not about Cyrodiil, it's about game performance.
I love the game and I can stand some amount of suffering, but this amount is deadly close to beyond reasonably. [snip]

I think they probably reduced server capacity for Cyrodiil again, and that's what the test was for; to see how much server to take from cyrodiil and move to other parts of the game. It's not just a memory leak. It's been a couple weeks now with earlier pop lock, longer queue times, and worse lag. The holidays are over, people are back to work, so that leaves ZOS probably took some more server resources away from Cyrodiil.

You know, I have been speculating this myself.

I have no idea why BR and GH have suddenly been pop locked every single night on PC NA when they weren't before. There is no way there are suddenly just 50-100% more people queueing every night. Yesterday night there was a 75 queue for GH, and a 30 queue for BR when I checked during prime time. I haven't seen numbers like that on weeknights in years.

I don't understand what's stopping ZOS from expanding their server resources for the game every time they add a new zone. Seems like the solution would be easy and fair. The bean counters are making the final calls on these issues though apparently.

So, today I did a dolmen in Alik'r desert with only one other person. How could that be possible if ZOS hadn't created more instances of the zone? My guess is that's where the server resources they probably took from Cyrodiil went.

Our group today had a discussion on this topic. We all agreed that they've further reduced the population cap to, we think, 60 players/faction now. This is yet another slap to the face of the PvP players. It feels like ZOS is just slowly phasing out PvP in ESO, and all evidence supports that conclusion.

No that's interesting. I think the last time there was less than 15 players on an active dolmen in Alik'r was sometime in 2015.

There has always been multiple instances for overland zones. Once an instance fills, a new one is created and remains perpetually until it empties.

I think it's likely that the Pop cap was reduced again. I played last Saturday on NA and despite being locked and a queue there were almost no fights to be found in BR.

Right, but isn't there a limit to how many instances there can be of any given zone? I haven't seen Alik'r as lonely as it was today in a very, very long time. I don't think it's a coincidence. ZOS changed something.
