How Do We Get More Threads of Fate?

Was doing Endless Archive, got kicked back out to the Index hub after wiping on a boss three times and losing all our Threads of Fate.

Can't enter the Archives again, and the NPC says we need to get threads again.

How? Can't find anything in the game. Googling turns up nothing. It must be blatantly obvious, but I'm not seeing it.

You have to start over by resetting the instance, there's an hourglass to do it inside the archives.

The hourglass says it'll start over and reset progress. I'm still showing at 2/4/3, I don't want to reset back to 1/1/1. If there's no way except to reset, why does it still show my progress as 2/4/3?

It's three lives and you're out unfortunately.

There's a vision to add an extra thread if you're lucky and if you complete an achievement you can unlock an upgrade for a fourth thread per run, but once you're out of threads, you're run is done and you have to start over again.

    Okay.

Now I'm confused why it still shows my progress as 2/4/3 instead of 1/1/1 though. That's the part that confused me, it makes it seem like I'm still in-progress.

Its tied to the instance. Once you reset, youll be kicked out, the instance will close, then youll have your threads back and youll be put back at 1/1/1 next you go in.

    Greetings,

This thread has been moved to the Players Helping Players section, as it is better suited there.

    Thank you for your understanding.

if you run with 2 players that both have the upgrade for +1 thread, you can actually start with 5 threads

How long before they 'Reform'? Minutes? Hours?

    This is so confusing. :(
Just too long for a daily endeavour. :(

And before I Google or YouTube, what are the three icons top right?

First time I've played it this morning, so sorry if it's obvious.

afaik if you step out of the instance you have a brief window (eg 5 min) to step back in before it auto resets
if you reset in the instance using the hourglass function, you're pushed out of the existing instance, it resets, and you can then zone back in to a clean instance when you want

Yes, it's confusing, it makes it sound like there's a time delay. There's not. You need to go to the hourglass and reset the instance. This will kick you out, and then you can re-enter and start over.

The three icons measure your progress, in order from left to right they are: Arc, Cycle, and Stage. Every time you zone to a new map (not counting the puzzles of Unknown Location portals), that's a stage. Every cycle consists of three stages: two stages of groups and a third stage with a boss. Every Arc consists of 5 cycles, and the boss of the fifth cycle is Tho'at Replicanum, who you need to defeat in order to get credit for the daily quest.

1 / 4 / 3, for example, means that you're in the first Arc (and haven't faced Tho'at yet), on the 4th cycle, and on the 3rd stage of the 4th cycle, which would be a boss stage.

    Thank you so much, AlCiao.
Now got the 'A Bookbinder's Bind' quest. [more confusion] Where to look?
At least my Arcanist is lasting longer than Battlegrounds. [thanks to Azandar Al-Cybiades] lol

    Thanks again.

You can purchase one extra thread/life as a permanent upgrade.
The pre-requisites are you have completed collecting books and lockboxes following the quests you get from the Destozuno's Library (portal to unknown) and you have spare 30,000 archival fortunes to buy this upgrade.
If both players in duo have the upgrade - you have 5 lives, not 3

Also sometimes with vision selection you might be offered the extra thread, but this is rare and unpredictable.
