Fiber connection with 200 - 1000 ping now!

Have a fiber connection in Norway. Usually 60 - 80 ping. For the first time it’s over 200, sometimes 999+.

Keybindings on all my toons have also been reset to default.

What happened?

Restarted my modem and ping back to normal.

My keybindings also back to normal. Why did they reset to default and return to my own customized settings after I restarted my internet connection?

Good question. IIRC keybindings are clientside?

    “IIRC keybindings are clientside?”

Not sure what that means. Just a regular pc, on the EU server.

Has there been any update or patch last 24 hours?

By that I mean that when you set keybindings, I *think* they're saved on your PC in the folder where you find the Addons folder, and UserSettings.txt - and I question-marked it because I could easily be wrong about that, so perhaps someone who happens on this thread and really knows will chime in.

If keybindings are NOT clientside (in other words, if they're stored on the server), then having mega-ping might have caused issues with your keybinds being set to default, and after your modem restart, and getting back to normal connection, would be why your custom ones were back.

There was a PC maintenance (no patch) yesterday morning:

Keybindings are saved server-side, so if you create a new character and make some keybinding changes on one computer, they will remain changed if you then play that character on another computer. What won't transfer across computers is, for example, resizing of the chat window which is therefore saved client-side.

That is my experience over the years with ESO installed on two PC desktops, not through Steam.

Ah, thank you Tandor! I thought I remembered from early in my relationship with the game that someone said the reason for using a keybind addon was because the bindings were stored clientside. And that was years back now, so I could simply be very confused (and no, I'm no way going to try to find the post again now!)

So in that case, that would be why the OP's keybindings were back to normal after he got his modem restarted and the ping back to normal.

But why did my ping skyrocket? Never happened before. Have excellent hardware and good fiber ISP here in Oslo. Hacked?

I experienced the same issue last night about 9-10 hours prior to maintenance on the PC/NA server. I ran a speed test with rfesults of ping 5.5ms, 885 MB/s download, and 105 MB/s upload. Restarted PC but the issue persisted. After logging back in multiple time the issue corrected itself. Strangely, the ping suddenly returned to normal about 45 seconds after logging in, initially with the same high ping and unresponsiveness.

As I have had this rarely occur before, I have a copy of my "usersettings" file in order to restore the keybindings.

Others have posted about lag and ping. I haven't had a problem (other than my normal satellite mega ping) so I haven't really paid much attention to the other threads. You could read them to see if there's any unifying situations among you. Or - it's possible (I don't know how possible with a fiber connection) that your ISP had some hiccups - did you contact them?

Just because your ping is high by no means suggests is a fault of ZoS or the game servers. Your traffic from your PC to the ZoS servers passes through many upstream switches and traverses several peering networks. If you want to find out the path and the respective latency to each of these points you need to run a tracert.

Simply saying "good fiber ISP" does not mean they are without challenges on upstream network performance.

    “did you contact them?”

    Too late in the evening.

Another issue is that ESO now crashes 2-3 times a day. Sometimes I then see a frozen image of when I played earlier that day, sometimes with another toon. The image lasts for half a second before the game crashes completely. The fans of my 3090 GPU is also running loud as hell (but not always). Does ESO on 4K and everything on max demand lots of GPU and CPU power?

Um. Probably. I have 4k screens, and a MUCH older GPU, but I'm not having that sort of crash at all. My fans are running normally. And this is an 8+ year old machine....

    Greetings,

After further review we have decided to move this thread to a category we think is more appropriate for this topic, as it's PC technical troubleshooting.

    Thank you for your understanding

This can happen with any update. I know someone where it happened randomly while we were playing. It tends not to be on purpose.

Making copies of the saved variables and addon settings files helps prevent losing everything altogether.

If these crashes continue, you should try the following steps if you've not done so yet.

What do I do if ESO is crashing with the error "ESO has stopped working"?

Does it crash because I have DDR5?

Having DD% memory should not cause crashing issues in ESO. You can run memory checks on your RAM to ensure there are not any issues.
