i think the only thing that the name actually "matters" in a regard is the storage chests, you can use the names to set labels for them and they show up when you target the chest
everything else, the name does absolutely nothing (mounts, pets)
i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them
Even you don't get to see your pet or mount names outside of the menu. I still pick names for them, but it does seem kind of pointless sometimes that they don't show up.

You know, I'm wondering if this might be a database-related thing. When you consider the huge number of non-combat pets that are in the game, with more being added all the time, it would require a massive amount of storage space to keep track of each pet's player-assigned name for each account. And even if there were enough storage space on the servers to keep up with all of those names, consider how much time it would take to load all of that data so the game could show you each pet's name as you encountered other players in the game.
I roll out with a Razak's Opus named Chug-Bug and an Adamant Dwarven Horse named Brasscephalus 2.0... (I also have a regular Dwarven Horse named just Brasscephalus, hence the 2.0)
