How do change user I.D. to prefered character name , when i click on the tab to change it , it does not change ?

for where are you trying to change it? the target window, nameplates, group window, chat?

I went to settings -interface - then display name , the clicked the tab for prefered charcter name , but its still just shows user ID . searched through all the settings , i must be missing somthing .

There's two settings, one for Keyboard mode and one for Controller, setting one does not affect the other. For Keyboard mode its Esc -> Settings -> Interface, for Controller its Start -> Options -> Interface. If you regularly switch between the two, you can have it show different from each other.

Thanks for replies I appreciate . I use keyboard , I went Esc > Settings > Interface > Display name(keyboard) > Then you have the tab that says Prefered user ID /Prefered character name i click on Prefered character name but the Character i have still has The user ID above his head , Ive tried on all 18 of my characters .

I'm on console so i can't say from a keyboard perspective, but if I turn on my nameplate the setting under interface changes the name above my head

Check your addons.
