a question about epic games and steam

so if i have ESO installed in epic games on windows and i also have eso on steam in windows, do i really have to d/l the game 2x - 1x for each store? can't i just use the ESO i d/l with epic to play also in steam? I mean i know i can run multiple steam accounts of eso off one install of steam. It would seem like such a waste of space to d/l it one for epic and another for steam. Please someone must have a solution?

There is a thread somewhere from a few weeks ago where someone explained how to link your Epic Games copy to your other copy so you don't need to download and install it a second time. Each launcher still has its own account information, so they can launch two separate sets of characters even though the game files are the same.

i found the thread but am having trouble getting it to work. From what i understood, there's one command to link from steam to epic and it's by creating a sym link. They said to run the epic install to d/l the install files for epic only, not the zenimax ones. then run the syml ink.

mklink /D "D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online" "D:\Epic\TheElderScrollsOnline\TheElderScrollsOnline"
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

so i am linking from my steam library where the files exist, to the epic path or do i need to switch them around maybe?
