How does this passive actually work for flame staff? It's written in an indecisive way in the patch notes. Does the passive increase all your damage done by 250/500 weapon/spell damage with the first hit of a status effect? Or, is it increasing just the first tick of a status effect like burning by 250/500?

That is not what it says.

Flame Staff: This passive now increases your damage done by the initial hit of status effects by 250/500, rather than increasing single target damage done by 5/10%.

500 flat damage added to status effects.

Ok, so it's status effects that are buffed. Zos really could worded this better. This is a terrible change then.

This is a terrible nerf to Fire Staves.

I get that they wanted to make Lightning more attractive to dummy-humping meta-chasers, but this change buries it into the ground by losing that much damage.

How is this comparable with the small tweaks that other weapons got?

What lightning staves had going for them (channeled attacks) has been changed as well, I think they could've capitulated on that kind of mechanical advantage instead of trying to streamline everything and forcing their use by nerfing fire staves.

Melee weapons will be even more miles ahead of staves now.

It's actually a very interesting change. I like it. I don't love it.... But I do like it. Makes status effects focused builds a real thing

I like the focus on status effects, I just don't think this is a good passive (it's already opening up a ton of very broken and abusable combos in PvP) or that the Fire Staff playstyle should be so narrowly streamlined in that direction, either.

It's the favorite weapon of many mages of any kind. Don't force them all into the same play style just in order for the weapon choice to feel impactful.

I like that they added a status effect archetype to staves—but wouldn't it have helped our Frost Staves more? That would help tanks have some flat damage and add DPS to a staff that already focuses on status effects.
