Maintenance for the week of September 22:
· [COMPLETE] NA megaservers for maintenance – September 22, 4:00AM EDT (8:00 UTC) - 10:00AM EDT (14:00 UTC)
· [COMPLETE] EU megaservers for maintenance – September 22, 8:00 UTC (4:00AM EDT) - 14:00 UTC (10:00AM EDT)
The maintenance is complete, and the PTS is now back online and patch 11.2.1 is available.

Question about PTS character copy - do I need to do something before the PTS goes up for an Update?

So I read this article:
https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/38307/~/how-i-can-copy-my-characters-to-pts
Character copies are done automatically by the system and you are not able to manually copy your characters over.

When we copy characters over to the PTS server, we typically rotate between copying NA characters and EU characters, but not both at the same time. If your character did not get copied over during this cycle, we recommend keeping an eye out on the PTS forums for any announcements as to when your region's characters might be copied over.

I logged onto the PTS over the weekend, and my characters are not there.

I was expecting that they'd already be there, given that the 1st version for an Update on the PTS typically includes the PC NA characters being copied over.

Does anyone know what gates characters being copied? Do I need to have installed the PTS client to accept the terms (EULA, etc), prior to ZoS copying them over?

We're already on week 3, so EU. Probably will remain on EU until October given recent history.

But no, characters are copied regardless of what you have or haven't done. It's just a full snapshot of the relevant server at copy time, including characters, guild listings and membership and anything else.

    Thanks for this.

So if I start playing the PTS during week 3 on PC NA, shouldn't my characters have been copied in prior weeks, e.g. week 1?

I'm confused as to why my characters from live haven't been copied to the PTS.

You don’t play PTS on EU or NA. You play the single server called PTS, which can only have data from one live server copied at a time.

PC NA was copied to the PTS for Week 1 and remained there for Week 2. This past Monday, which began Week 3, PC EU data was copied over the PC NA data on the PTS, erasing what had been there for Weeks 1 and 2.

Your NA characters were copied, but you missed the two-week window when they were available.

That is a strange methodology, as it means that a NA player can only easily evaluate the PTS during the first 2 weeks.

It's tedious to have to open up crates, pull sets out, go get them enchanted and traited, etc. Character copy would be vastly more convenient.

This is my free time, and I don't feel like ZoS is valuing it.

If you had access to your NA characters all the time, that would mean that EU would not get a chance to use their characters at all, which is hardly fair to people who only play there. They can’t have both databases coexisting on a single server due to technical limitations. Some cycles NA gets more weeks, and some cycles EU does.

Personally I find it about 10 minutes’ worth of work to set up a template character on the PTS. I have him until the next copy, which can be two weeks or several months. I find that a reasonable price to pay for EU also having a chance to use their current characters just as I did mine.

I'm not advocating for excluding a server population. That would be inane.

ZoS could provide an option to choose which characters to copy, from where. That would be a far more robust solution, and provide convenience for players.

Again, that is technically impossible until they develop a tool to allow two different database parts to coexist or one part of one database to be copied onto a different, already populated database. They have already said they are not interested in developing a tool to allow such transfers for live, even though they stand to make money doing so. People have been asking for years, and the answer has always been that they have no plans to pursue that avenue.

    https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25807/~/can-i-transfer-my-eso-account-and-characters-between-different-platforms-or

Note that while they mention platforms in the text, the question posed addresses transferring servers as well.
