Returning player noob pvp gear questions

It's been years since I played. I actually never did any pvp, even though that's normally my end game thing in all MMOs. Anyway, I'm a little confused on gear with regards to pvp. Do you just bring your crafted/dropped gear you made or found in the wild/dungeons/trials, or is there like actual pvp gear that you should use that offers a better advantage?

I did a search for pvp gear and there do seem to be sets marked as that, but I don't really get why those sets are "pvp oriented" (well some are obvious like -10% player damage, others less so like Alessian Order which looks like it could work for pve just fine, not sure what about it makes it a "pvp set").

Also, when it comes to gear, I'm guessing there's like tiers in terms of which quality is best in slot. Do you craft/buy it from someone, or do you have to earn it through some sort of currency (like how WoW does it with conquest/honor points)?

In case it matters, I'd be doing battlegrounds.

You can use any gear that you acquired by crafting, dungeon, overland, or trials.

Is there any particular advantage to using pvp sets over pve sets? Or is everything totally dependent on your playstyle and skills you're using?

unless it has a specific "pvp" effect (only works against players) most people call "pvp gear" any gear that the source to obtain it is from pvp zone (cyro, IC, or BG)

a large amount of the "pvp sets" also work great in pve too

there are also some gear sourced from pve that work great in pvp (looking at the caluurion gankblade for example lol)

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

ESO doesn't really make that distinction. You can successfully use any set anywhere. There isn't a power difference between crafted sets, overland, dungeon, trial or PvP-sourced sets on the whole. Whether a set will work for you depends on class, playstyle, and your individual build philosophy. In some cases it may depend on what your race already brings to the table and what gaps you want to fill in. That said, there are some trends:
    • Trial-derived sets are typically designed for PvE and often include PvE only buffs (Major / Minor Slayer / Aegis) that would go to waste in PvP. Nonetheless Olorime has recently become a meta back bar option among some PvPers.
    • Conversely PvP-sourced sets tend to bring something to the table for PvP, but for example the Deadly Strike set has become a meta PvE set for templars.
    • Don't wear Alessian. Health regen has been nerfed to 50% in PvP. Any build video recommending that set likely predates that nerf. If you want to build into health regen, you still can, but IMO you'd have to fully commit to it with something like Gaze of Sithis plus Alessian or Eternal Vigor. That would likely make you a tank with limited damage (albeit non-blocking with Sithis). It's questionable, although it might be a survival option as a beginner.
    • PvE damage dealing generally thrives on very high crit rates in excess of 70% for a pure DD. In PvP a crit rate between 30% to 40% on a medium or light armor build is sufficient to high, these days. In PvE your average damage over a long fight counts. In PvP it is sufficient to get a few lucky crits in a row to burst another player down or you may not build for crit at all.
    • Penetration is a highly valued stat in PvP. Some players build for that and may achieve in excess of 20K. Sharpened weapons are considered BIS and mauls / maces are typically preferred by PvPers for their front bar weapon. PvEers are more likely to prefer Precise weapons for the crit. Mobs in PvE vary from having no armor to 18.2K at most. An organised trial group provides that (limited, compared to PvP) amount of penetration needed by means other than your weapon.
    • In PvE you may get away with 20K health as a DD. In PvP many players prefer 30K.
    • The armor cap is 33K, which mitigates 50% of damage. Having more armor than 33K is not beneficial in PvE, because no NPC has penetration. In PvP having more armor than 33K can be beneficial, although that is playstule dependent. If you block a lot, are not very mobile and are wearing heavy armor, you might go for higher than 33K resistances.
    • Preferred armor traits in PvP include Impenetrable, Well Fitted, possibly Sturdy for some builds. The preferred armor trait for a PvE DD tends to be Divines along with the Thief mundus.
    • Preferred mundus stones in PvP range from stamina / magicka recovery, penetration, armor, magicka, probably anything but the Thief.
    • In PvE you tend to build for crit %. In PvP you tend to build for weapon or spell damage.
    • If you are a PvP magsorc, your preferred stat to build for is magicka instead, as that increases your shield size. This approach can also work for other magicka classes, notably nightblade and warden. In that case you're usually well advised to throw everything into magicka and sustain, but no spell damage. Magicka also increases the damage you do and you should shoot for 45K+ in CP (e.g. Cyro / IC, not BGs).
    • The preferred jewelry trait for a PvE DD tends to be Bloodthirsty. For a PvP DD it tends to be Infused, with Swift possibly running a close second, or Arcane on a magsorc.
    • Weapons should be gold quality. Gear is fine in purple. No need to gold out, ever. Arcane / Robust / Healthy jewelry is fine in blue quality. Infused or Swift should be at least purple.
    • PvP builds typically require all round stats. Magicka builds require some stamina and / or stamina sustain for break free / dodge rolls. Stamina builds may require some magicka / magicka regen for utility, though typically less urgently than magicka builds require stamina. Prismatic (Hakeijo) enchants on gear are one option to get you some of the way there. These are seldom, if ever, used on PvE builds that typically don't require anything above the basic off-stat they have by default.
All of this is to say that, while there is a great deal of overlap between sets used in PvP and PvE, the above conspires that you will never share many pieces of gear between "properly made" PvP and PvE builds. In PvP you tend to use sharpened / penetration weapons. In PvE you tend to use crit weapons. The exception is the back bar weapon, which may well be Infused in both cases. In PvP you tend to use Well Fitted / Impenetrable / Sturdy gear with Hakeijo enchants. In PvE (as a DD) you tend to use Divines gear with straight up magicka or stamina enchants. And so on.

NPCs may not have penetration, but some do have armor debuffs

it is worth noting though that it is extremely rare and usually only limited in situations such as some trials and maybe dungeons, so not something that needs to really be planned for in most cases
