[PC] recommended controllers?

Been using the xbox controller with chatpad for extra shortcuts which is okay but far from good.

RT/LT have slow response due to longer pressing, pressing sticks feels awkward, the shape of d-pad makes it unusable for combat and most importantly multi-button actions need to be remapped to single buttons because in PvP combinations frequently fail.

I found a possible solution today - use any controller which still supports the old DirectInput driver (128 buttons max) instead of the new XInput which is limited to 10+2+2 buttons, but which controllers still provide DirectInput and offer tons of extra buttons? Razer ultimate wolverine, scuf prestige and xbox elite are all xinput only.

PS: to assign everything it should take 20 buttons at least: 5 abi, LA/HA, 2 bar switch (front+back), 2 interacts, target/jump/crouch/dodge/block/interrupt/mount/sprint/quickslot/ulti

I just use an xbox controller and have no issues with it.

I used to play with keyboard and mouse on other MMOs but much prefer the controller now, although I do use mouse and keyboard for menusetc.

https://www.astrogaming.com/en-eu/products/controllers/c40-tr-gen-1.940-000185.html I've used a few controllers before settling on this one. I used the two extra buttons on the back to replace two of my d-pad inputs that felt inconvenient to use.

What feels best for me was changing R1 to a dedicated interrupt button. I made rear button 1 (d-pad left) ability 5 and rear button 2 (d-pad up) weapon swap. I made d-pad down use potion and I turned d-pad right into a dedicated ult button. I use the keyboard to zoom in and out on my character.

    Favorite Foods and Potions
    https://media.giphy.com/media/3otPoTggaYFNd1FdAI/giphy.gif
    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

I can't imagine playing serious PvP with a controller tbh, much easier to move the camera with a mouse. Though I've mostly played games with a m+kb setup and only a little bit of controller so that's probably why. Still, opponents with an okay mouse will still have an advantage over you (especially streak-freak sorcs).

I use a Xbox controller with no problems. If you’re having lag issues try this:
    1) wired. For the love of holy don’t use a wireless controller
    2) if you’re not using a monitor, (I use a 75in tv) put into Game Mode
    3. Hard wire your router to pc

I agree if you try to play it with a keyboard and standard mouse, but if you make the transition to a gaming mouse, it works perfectly.

I have one, I feel like I'm strafing too much which is why I feel more comfortable with a controller instead.

In fact I have close to that same keyboard and mouse. I play other games fine with it. Just ESO feels to awkward for me.

I used to play WoW (successfully) with a Razer xbox 360 controller, using Xpadder then another one beginning with P... Profiler? Idk. Basically it can always be done with remappable buttons and logical skill placements. Currently using the Razer Wolverine TE

Mouse and keyboard should never be used for any game, keep them to their original design purpose: word documents.

from all i've tried there is Xbox 360 Controller Emulator program with lot of exercises to configure controller to work (never used it with eso) and it needed custom input.ini to work in games and not in all games... see internet for it and ask support if you can get ban, because of this custom ini (if it even works).

at the end stopped at xbox (mass supported, also as UI), now i'm using xbox one and elite 2 -> microsoft accessories -> triggers can be adjusted and 3 profiles saved in controller + mini touchpad/keyboard (ebay, amazon etc.)

for camera in pvp there is ini edit (which i don't know it as i'm in pvp once in a blue moon).

Edit: replaced JoyToKey with Xbox 360 Controller Emulator

I'm using a PS5 controller, very comfortable. Just use steam for x input. Works flawlessly.

I started ESO mainly on PS4, when I transitioned to PC I could not get use to mouse and keyboard after the year or so of muscle memory I built up. It's frankly just more comfortable, anyone who says you can't PVE or PVP with a controller properly doesn't know what they're saying.

Map the weapon swap key to the Right Joystick Press instead of Sneak. I did this day 1 on PS4 using the accessibility settings, if you're trying to weapon swap with left on the d-pad using the default settings, god help you. All the other buttons remain the same.

Typically, I use my spammable on Left Bumper (L1) and my Execute on Right Bumper (R1). These are my most used abilities and require freedom of movement on the right joystick for aiming in combat.

X (Square) is typically used for my semi spammable as it's the closest to the joystick. Eg. Warden's Scorch, Sorcs Curse/Bound Armaments, Templars Power of the Light, Necro's Blastbones, etc.

Y (Triangle) and B (Circle) are usually utility/dot skills I use less frequently as they're the most "awkward" to press being the farthest from the right joystick.

Set yourself up this way and you'll do just fine :)

Do they work reliably if you map them to combinations?

Normal combinations like ulti work poorly in pvp as sometimes only the first button is recognized.
You only need 1 button for bar swap...

I want to use swap to bar 1 and swap to bar 2

Because it delays in pvp so much and abilities from both bars are mixed up I can't even tell which bar is on in the heat of combat. Having wrong bar is now no.2 reason of death

Xbox elite controller. You can Google how to change controllers stick sensitivity in the games files so that you don't walk like a penguin, and can quickly respond without using any programs or workarounds to do so. Mine works fine. I am a console transfer and tbh I'm just not interested in retraining muscle memory on a game I already have embedded in my brain on game pad. That would basically be like walking backwards at this point.
So, imo, if you have a physical reason you need to use a gamepad or just prefer one.. I like the Xbox elite best .. I have series 2 currently (I liked series 1 better honestly) . Then I would do a quick search on adjusting the sensitivity settings in the game file. I'll see if I can find it and come back in a bit.

no wireless, no latency with 8m USB cable

Only problem I can tell is some actions have lower chance of firing when I'm moving, dunno if it's specific to ESO.

But after playing games on my sofa for a year I don't know how to go back... doesn't feel right to use kb/mouse anymore. Also the non-controller UI in ESO and other games just feel too small and complicated.

I have a question for those who use gamepad and change the button configuration, do you use any addon? Or only external programs?

I use 'DS4Windows' and I can change the settings. But in the future I want to buy the steam deck and I wanted to know if the position of the buttons can be changed with an addon, so as not to install external programs

I'm pretty sure the Steamdeck will include software to allow you to bind a game's controls to it's buttons and to remap them to suit you. Steam already has controller support with presets for several controllers and the option to configure your own setup for ones that don't get an official preset so I assume it will build on that.

But if not what's the difference between installing an addon for ESO and installing a seperate program to configure the controls? Either way it's additional software that will need to be downloaded and installed and it will do the same thing.
