Well, if you're solo you don't need to worry too much about your race. The ultra-competitive content where everything matters, including race, is group content. Furthermore it matters only, because other people think it matters, they want to push scores and they are ultra-competitive. That said, the races that bring something to a magblade are:
Breton
Altmer
Dunmer
Khajiit
Honorable mention goes to Argonian from a ruggedness / healing perspective. Altmer, Dunmer and Khajiit buff your damage and healing. Breton buffs your sustain, which indirectly buffs your damage and healing as you need to invest less into sustain.
PC EU: Magblade (PvP main), DK (PvE Tank), Sorc (PvP and PvE), Magden (PvE Healer), Magplar (PvP and PvE DD), Arcanist (PvE DD)
PC NA: Magblade (PvP and PvE every role)
I've always had a preference for dunmer. It has all the relevant stats, plus the bonus of being able to switch out of (and back into) magicka as you please.

Can not agree more. I think the stamina bump it give you is very underrated as when playing with a magblade you go back and forth with melee and ranged attacks and do a lot of roll dodging and blocking in group play. And even though the burning immunity is gone, the resistance from flame damage is still worthwhile.
And in 12 months time the optimal class will have changed anyway as they try and keep everything balanced.
In CP content it also makes almost no difference because putting your CP in slightly different spots has roughly the same effect unless you are trying to totally max something like say crit at any cost.
