Not been pvping long. I've been playing a stamplar exclusively in no CP for the last few months and love it. I started 5 medium 2 heavy but switched to all heavy by trial and error as I found a balance between staying alive and getting kills.

I've started thinking about turning my pve magsorc to pvp. I've done a fair amount of reading and build video watching - so I've got a fair idea of the skills and sets that are recommended, crafty alfiq, spinners, heartland, shacklebreaker etc. My question is about armour type. Everyone uses 5 light. HEavy and defensive sets don't come up in any builds or discussions

I'm not a great pvper. My experience with my stamplar was that 5 medium got me faster kills but faster deaths and switching to a more defensive setup has been getting decent numbers of kills but fewer/ slower deaths - it is a melee build, though

My defensive instinct tells me to go Crafty Alfiq and a crafted set like heartland which I can make heavy and start 5 heavy/ 2 light and gradually change it out as I sort out how to play the toon. But am I being too cautious? I realise penetration is a real issue and am torn between a more offensive combination like alfiq and spinners or a defensive heavy armor set up?

What about the incoming patch -I read comments somewhere that heavy will be better? Is that true or false?

Usually go 5x light and stack magicka. Players can burst through a 10k or 20k shield so dodge roll.

Close quarter deathmatch you can switch to 5x heavy (Aetherial Ascension, Pariah, etc) and still do well.

Gaze + AA + Crafty is very strong and I do not see many players using it. Many players run from you in this build.

Don't forget about Stage 3 Vampirism damage mitigation. It should be meta now.

Gaze, Crafty, Ancient grace, shoulder of your choice and two piece trainee. 6 light 1 heavy. Spinners isn't worth it. You will have more pen with 6 light than using spinners AND you will also have more magic. With this build you should sit around 28k resistance with 45-48k magic depending if you use magelight and around 30k health. You should also have around 10-11k pen and 3k spell damage unbuffed.

You want to get use to not using defensive sets. Defensive sets make you a bad player in my opinion and teach you bad habits like not blocking or increasing the time you can react. If your going the casual route then I say defensive sets are fine you will just lack alot of damage. But keep in mind mag sorc has a lot of mobility and defense built into their skills with hardened ward and streak. The best defense is a better offense.

you can always craft 5 heavy julianos to still do damage, but make yourself a little harder to kill...

if you don't want to keep your shield and storm up all the time, you can slot chudan...
