updates and addons

I haven't been through a big patch with this game since I just started 3 months ago. My question is, how broken are the addons going to be after the patch and for how long will they be broken?

Many will be out of date the day the patch drops but otherwise still work as long as you check the "Allow out of date AddOns" checkbox on your character select screen.

Usually, AddOns that are actively supported will be updated within the first few days after a bigger patch to match the new API version number and/or fix any problems related to API updates.

Thanks that's what I was hoping for.

The checkbox was removed at it was nonsense. You get a notification now as you login if your addons contain outdated ones, once after a patch.

Just wait a few days, most addons get updated quickly/are already updated and the update just needs some time to register them all at www.esoui.vom and thus at Minion.

If you get any error messages report them at the addons websites comments and tell the dev how to get to the error in detail. That will help to fix it. And please always test without any other addon enabled if you get error messages to make sure it's the addon itself and not any other addon interfering!

What do you mean "nonsense"? I have a few addons that are years out-of-date, not maintained, and yet have worked just fine when I ticked the erstwhile box. As I really am not comfortable playing the game without those addons, I'm glad that my subscription just ran out so I don't have to worry about it when I just log on daily for the (measly) reward. Meanwhile, I'm hoping that the checkbox will be returned so I can resume playing; frankly, the sooner the better.

Woops, looks like I misunderstood how it works and out-of-date addons are in fact enabled unless I untick them myself. Please ignore my outraged diatribe while I go hide my head in shame.

No problem. Many ppl do not understand that checkbox and still do not understand what it was for :-)
Simply forget the "out of date"! In total! Addons work or not, no matetr what APIVersion they were made for or what date they were last updated. You need to simply try and that's all. The "out of date" or now "You got old addons" is just a mess and does not tell you a damn about the working state of any addon. It's just ZOs telling you "there is an addon which was not updated recently with it's APIVersion tag and thus we consider it to be old..."

    Example:
Why should one update any addon which just provides a keybind that e.g. opens the settings menu? It maybe created in 2014 and still works great. Just because the APIVersion 2014 was 100003 and ow it is 100035 it says "I'm old"/"outdated".
You can either cahnge the ## APIVersion iin the txt file of those addons manually to "visually fix this issue for yourself" or just ignore it.

My oldest addon hasn't had any updates since July 2015, and that was just to change the version number so it wouldn't show as out of date. It hasn't had any real changes since April 2014. It still works perfectly well in spite of that.

Others will be completely unusable after one patch and I'll have to disable them until the author has time to update them, which might be anything from a few days to a few weeks, or never in some cases. If the author isn't maintaining an addon any more then maybe someone else will take it on, if not and it's not working any more then unfortunately you'll need to find a replacement but in my experience that's pretty rare.

It really depends on what the addon does and what the update is changing. That one from 2014 which still works is fairly simple; it's called Binder and just uses chat commands to save and load key bindings, so it's pretty stable. More complex addons which interact with lots of systems are more likely to be affected by updates, but I'm not sure there's a way to predict which will be affected by each patch without learning all about how they each work.
