Melee pretty useless in pvp

merrickci
merrickci
So I'm a nightblade lvl 39 duel wielding daggers.
I have played a bit of pvp so far, I can get kills in, but eso pretty much is forcing me to become ranged...

Ranged players if they spot me first I'm dead.... They pretty much stun lock me from a distance, and nb vanish skill way to short to get up close.

Also when in pvp the npcs are up in towers which a melee character absolutely is useless (the mages)

Anyone else agree, or having a terrible melee pvp experience as a night blade?? I have no interest in using a bow, everyone does it...

Invest in a skill or skills that allow you to quickly close the distance inbetween you and your target, And maybe also get a stun/immoblize?

You should change the thread title to "Melee Nightblade pretty useless in PvP". Then do what the cool kids are doing and roll Dragonknight or Sorcerer and find out how viable melee PvP can be.

If you have ever played GW2 (or DAoC, but I didnt play that one), you would have learned that lesson a long time ago. Large scale pvp is all ranged, aside from small group or solo ganking. Better level up that bow!

Melee is for small scale raids in any RvR type content and always will be. I don't see a way for melee to ever be on even ground in these massive pvp type battles in any mmo. That is why melee have never been a good choice in any large scale pvp format in any game.

You would just have to be entirely too tanky and do too much damage to ever be balance for an mmo. That said small skirmishes away from the zerging hordes you can fight on even ground. If you want a strictly melee all the time character for pvp you'll find better success if small scale battlegrounds (much like WoW has) are released at a future date.

The last three posts here highlighting how central ranged combat is demonstrate why Dragonknight is not about what cool kids are doing but more like what smart kids are doing. DragonKnight's reflective scales is a game changer. Combine that with vampire skills mist&ultimate and Dark Talons or Greendragonblood and you will enjoy easy pvp domination. In pve melee/ranged Nightblade might be fun but it has nowhere near the utility of DragonKnight in pvp not to mention how many Nightblade skills are just bugged or broken. Comprehensive list of bugged Nightblade skills

If you want a challenge in pvp with not much utility ranged/melee Nightblade will provide that. For a class that is perfectly designed to have utility and counters in every pvp situation especially ranged (reflective scales) the obvious choice is DragonKnight. Nightblade healers and mages are probably the only viable way to go in pvp unless like I said you want a class that is completely gimped compared to the utility of a DragonKnight.

DK do have the benefit you cannot avoid being hit by DT at the moment. If the skill ever gets adjusted where it isn't spammable or perhaps avoidable in some way DK utility will go down drastically. I'd also venture to say when they fix issues with bats being damn near free and spammable their sustain will drastically drop like all other melee.

Those two issues are pretty much what keeps DK semi-viable right now. I personally take that setup with a grain of salt. It is powerful now, but when those issues get fix/adjusted they will join the ranks of the rest of the melee in terms of zerg RvR standings. A combination of bugs/abusive abilities that everyone knows will be adjusted isn't something I'd rest my hopes on nor purposely make a character for that setup alone.

Granted I responded to this post mainly from a NB pov. Melee in general can still be very effective in pvp as long as you don't try and follow the zergs.

    What?...

Melee is perfectly viable in PvP, I don't know where you are coming from (I'm a DW NB).

To be brutally honest, TESO has the whole melee vs. ranged thing the closest to equal than any other MMO that I have played.

There are tons of utility skills/ spells at your disposal to close the gap against ranged. If you chose to opt out of using gap closers, then have a ranged loadout ready and waiting.

If you choose to do neither, then that really isn't a fault with the game.

I dont get the OP either... As a wizard v1 I am often killed by NBs because they stunlock me to death from a stealth ambush.

It looks like stacking HP is the only way to survive the initial stunlocks... at least armor seems to have very low effect, since I am in the overcharged region with my armor.

I doubt my post will be read by the dev's, but I really would like to see armor more effective in PvP and HP less effective instead. I dont want to put all my attribute points in HP as wizard -.-
  • Nugeneration
Adernath it's perfectly fine to put all your points in magic. Just use +health on all your gear then. Placing stat points means very little overall. Use enchants to make up for whatever you are putting points into.

Considering the fact that most of my deaths in PVP have been down to Nightblades, & not just the pale ones who like the taste of the red sticky stuff, I'd say Nightblades are perfectly fine in PVP.
You don't need to use to the shield-spam exploit to be a stunlock king.

Are you trying to play solo? If so, I imagine it would be hard. But I've been a melee player in WAR, which had a similar system of pvp, and it's ok in a group. That being said, it's very much like real warfare you could argue: the footsoliders are the arrow fodder if used early on in the assault. Ranged are useful at all stages of a siege.

I would advise being both; weapon swap is there for a reason. Be ranged/healer at times when it isn't sensible to be melee.

Melee in massive numbers PVP is all about timing and proper positioning according to your build.

    During the stand-offs: Don't engage
During the initial charge: Engage only if you are relatively tanky
Not relatively tanky? Engage directly after the initial charge.

Built entirely of toilet paper soaked in gasoline that is on fire? Attack from another direction completely slightly after the main charge. This may be picking off people from the side or the back. This may also be coming in at a diagonal angle to support the main charge.

Too much for you or just plain chicken shi...lol? Pick off people between the main enemy force and their nearest spawn point. Choose your targets carefully understanding who may or may not join the fight. Have a way to escape if needed.

Don't lose heart though. The only reason the ranged can do their job is becuase people like you are out there killing on the front lines. Without you they would be worth half as much.

    Some questions answer themselves:
So what is the problem with building specifically against an oil farm????

    oil farm????

Well, you shouldn't really be using invisibility as a gap closer, but you do know you can reactivate invisibility while you're invisible, right? It can last as long as you have mana. Use ambush to close the gap.

Anyway, nightblade melee is not really viable in large group situations, until maybe 10 seconds after the initial clash, which is also around the time the fight is decided anyway. Maybe stacking dodge chance could work though? Been wondering how dodge works - does it work against spell projectiles and arrows or just melee attacks?

I notice a lot of people saying melee are useless in large scale pvp, that coupled with should have learned that from games like gw2 really makes me want to laugh. I hate to be this blunt but learning how and when to strike is huge if your going to play a melee. Running head long into an open field between two large groups ranging is going to end badly. I've played large scale pvp in so many good pvp games (gw2 is not on my list) and see a good two to three man group role entire raid groups many times over (melee or a mixture either way).

I could go on forever about different strategies but here is a simple method that's worked in warhammer, aoc, rift, daoc, df, dfu and here as well. Simply use a pull from your front lines on every over zealous ranged target that happens to run a little too close to the main group and well they should handle the rest. What not a dk? then invest in morphing silver bolt. Keep in mind that is just one tactic there are probably hundreds which I won't waste time posting as a good pvp guide can fill you in.

Forgot to add healers are the best targets for this and the most helpful for your group. Since your waiting for that right moment to strike you generally have time while watching everyone else pew, pew away to pick that perfect target out.

It would have been really fun to be melee pvp'er IF they would have included scenarios like they had in warhammer online.

That was also extremely fun, do some pve and take a break with a bit of sandboxed rvr.

All thou to be honest, warhammer onlines open rvr zones was also the most fun I've had in ages after daoc. The rvr I've seen this far in this game is sort of boring, I mean, who really finds sieges here fun? Capping farms with a little group, fun in three evenings at most.

I really hope they look into their pvp approach and change it all around.

I have to say, this is a wonderful team. PvP where one person can't do everything, keep some mages and archers with you and when you get into fights pick off the other teams archers and mages.

Please read through and comment on my incredibly comprehensive Vampire guide. :)
