I agree in principle but I doubt we'll ever get this.
Can't offer you a solution for houses being too bright.
But if you're finding them too dark a "Clockwork Illumator, Solitary Capsure" light (blue crated furnishing) clipped in the floor or ceiling will up the ambient lighting over a big area and barely be noticeable. It just provides a very natural light, things like the two Culanda Stone lights work too but they're extremely bright at the source of the light and.... I just don't like them tbh.
I actually like it very much that it's so dark in the houses. This is realistic for buildings without electric lights and without large windows with glass. Some houses used to have no windows at all because they weren't well insulated either and you could leave the cold (or heat) outside. You can also arrange the light sources much better this way, or its is more interesting, I think.
